I remember a post somewhere where the guy found himself in a similar situation. He wanted to approach a woman on the subway but she had her headphones in. He sat down next to her, pulled out his phone, and typed "whatcha listenin' to?" or something on the notepad and handed it to her. IIRC, he got a number out of it.

I don't think this would work, walking by in the street, but I heard an interesting opener with iPods. A guy was sitting next to a woman on a bus, they were both listening to their iPods. So he pulls the headphone jack out, holds the plug out, nudges the woman, and gives a little gesture of pushing the iPod and the headphone plug towards her. It was a little gesture of "hey, let's switch our headphones into each other's iPod, you listen to what I'm playing, I'll listen to what you're playing."

All depends on the situation. If I was you and there was enough time to pull this off, I would put on my own headphones and then once I saw her within range I would mime out the drum solo from "In the Air Tonight." When she looks puzzled, take your headphones out and say, "You have to do the drum solo to In the Air Tonight. What are you listening to?"

Do the method David Wygant came up with for gym pickup.

When you see her with her headphones on, put your hands up to your ears and do the motion of taking out headphones. She'll take her's out cuz she knows you want to say something to her.

Now, say something like "I always see you walking buy, listening to your music and you're so -insert adjective (focused, efficient, w/e)-. What do you listen to?"

Discuss the music she listens to, tease her bout her music choice playfully, etc.

This does feel more natural at a gym cuz you can say "you always work out so intensly, you must have a bad ass playlist that you're listening to." But in this situation it'll work.

Do anything. Just do it like a boss. Say "Fahrvergnügen" with a half-cocked smile and see where it goes, à la the movie "Love Potion #9" -- watch him when he goes back into the bar and sits down next to the HB6 in the black dress.
