Very interesting. I wonder if this conflicts with the neoteny theory of human evolution though (described in "The Red Queen") which says that we evolved to find youthful features more attractive.

I didn't read the article, but I'll philosophize a bit.

There's a lot of forces at play here I bet.

Dominance/Submissiveness. Within the last 100s of years (maybe thousands, maybe millions) men have generally been more dominant and women have been more submissive. We're generally attracted to submissiveness- in other words, the younger the better.
Puberty. There's a reason most of us reach puberty at such a young age. There's a reason girls are able to have babies so early. I guess this example might represent a counterpoint to OP, since guys also hit puberty at a young age- but the main point is, it's pretty obvious that we have a history of fucking younger girls, so it's easy to see why we'd be attracted to them in general. Also, girls generally hit puberty at an earlier age than guys- that fact alone supports the argument.
Monogamy/Non-monogamy. I'm pretty sure it's been proven that men weren't made for monogamous, long-term relationships. Look at penis shape and primate behavior (and probably quite a few other things) for examples. Women were made to be able to raise the child/children. Look at length of pregnancy- and how pregnancy works in general- and hormones for examples (it's been shown that women- and even primates- instantly develop a certain bond with their offspring upon conception, that isn't the same for males). In other words, we were meant to spread our seed, and since we're already attracted to younger females, we were basically meant to spread our seed to as many younger/fertile/attractive females as possible. Which further strengthens support for the idea that we're attracted to younger females.

Now let's look at it from a social perspective:

The Media. This is obvious. I don't need to explain it further.
"Innocence." For all of recorded history, innocence has been considered a "virtue" for girls. The younger you are, the more "innocent" you are (in most cases).
I'm tired of typing, so I'll end this part here.

Let's look at the female perspective.

For as far back as we can research, it's the guys who have gone out hunting and providing for their family/community. Most animal species are still like this- as well as most primates (except the bonobo? I think). So what do girls look for? A guy who can provide for them. What kind of guy can provide for them in today's society? Generally, a rich guy. What kind of guy is rich? Generally, an older guy. [HOWEVER, don't start thinking you need to be rich- or even protective/providing. Those traits are just subcategories of confidence. So if you're confident, you can give off the "instinctive" vibe that you're able to provide for and protect the girl. Which is awesome.]
Experience. Guys, for the most part, can cum pretty quickly (especially when they don't have experience). Girls, for the most part, can't. So this works in two ways. One, the more-experienced guy generally doesn't cum as quickly (so he has more time to pleasure the girl). Two, the more-experienced guy will have an easier time getting the girl to climax (because he knows different "methods" and strategies). IMO, this has a basis in evolution (don't ask me why it's like this- I have no idea). The point is, millions of years of evolution have made it harder for the girl to orgasm. Who has a better chance at making her cum? The guy with experience. Who has more experience? Usually the older guy.
Then there's the whole Freudian thing (which I support) with the "daddy issues." Guys usually develop- at a very early age- some sort of connection with their moms (and it's often sexual, to some extent). Girls do likewise with their dads (makes sense, since girls are usually attracted to guys, and Dad is the first guy they interact with). This is pretty obvious- dads are older than their daughters, so it makes sense that she'd be attracted to older guys (though mostly, she'll be attracted to any guy who's similar to her dad). There are plenty of exceptions, but I think that's the general rule.

I'm glad I typed such a long post, considering NONE OF THIS MATTERS AT ALL. I love milfs (even gilfs). Age isn't much of a factor in today's society, so there's really no reason to discuss it as it pertains to seduction. It remains true though, that guys generally go for younger girls, and girls generally go for older guys.

I've always thought that dating/sex/relationships/marriage would work a lot better if older men hooked up with younger women, and younger men hooked up with older women.
