It's probably the classic shit test. It's also bait to go into the dreaded "job interview" question set. Don't go there. Try something like this:

Her: How old are you?
Him: You first. How old are you?

Make her jump through your hoop before you jump through hers. Women don't like being asked their age, so this kind of rubs their nose in the question. Also note, this shit test comes in another form, here's an actual dialog from an old FR of mine:

Her: How old do you think I am?
Me: Do you want me to guess high, or low?
Her: No, I want a real answer.
Me: Okay.. let me get a good look at you.
[She appears to be early 20s. I take her hand and make her twirl slowly. I make her stop twirling halfway, so I can get a good look at her ass. She jumps through my hoop]
Me: Hmmm.. maybe about 25 [I deliberately guess a bit high]
Her: oh you're so good, I'm 23. [she kisses me]

You can absolutely pick up women when their parents are around. The parents will see what you are doing, but if you are high value they won't mind (at least initial flirting and convo).

I was on a cruise this spring, and there was this exotic south American HB9 I had noticed a couple times but chickened out on approach.

One evening I'm in the buffet with my mother and the HB9 walks in with a father and brother (I assume relation). I decide to man up, walk over and introduce myself to the father. I sit next to HB9 and across from dad. Within seconds I introduce the father to my mother (added difficulty: cruise with mom) and they get to chatting. I then pivot to the HB9 who seems genuinely happy that a guy finally approached her. She was lonely during the cruise, I think.

Great 10 minute convo, but it turned out she was still in High School in South America (and a boyfriend mention in there). Felt like a boss pulling it off though.

Every time they ask "well how old am I?"

I'm a bit older than the average sedditor, and my usual haunts are near a sports arena, so there's often a wide range of ages: 20s-mid 40s. I don't think this one works as well if you are both early 20s.

Anyway, my usual response is to to look her in the eyes with a neutral expression, just long enough to make the moment slightly awkward. Then crack a slight smile and say, "Old enough to know better, but young enough not to care. How about you?"

The effect I'm trying for is signaling she transgressed a little with that question, but I'm amused, so I'll give her an answer, even if it's not the answer.

If she comes back with any kind of response that plays against my answer, it's easy to segue into a discussion about attitudes and experience vs actual calendar age. (DHV for crap that I've done).

If, on the other hand, that answer irritates her, she just flunked my own little shit test. I'm somewhat of a smart ass, and too comfortable with it to turn it off just to play PUA. So if she finds that too irritating, I'm never gonna close anyway, best find out early.

With parents. I don't know of any useful cold opener, like if you just happen to see them in a restaurant.

If it's a setting where you get introduced, or at some event (party, wedding) where you are expected to make small talk: Make friends with Dad, flirt casually with Mom. Tell dad a DHV story. Get intro'd to the girl, say you'll see her later, walk away and make the rounds. Loop back to see her once or twice, but by the second loop you need to find some reason to isolate her from Mom & Dad. Finding the reason is a setting and context issue. There's no silver bullet.

My Q: after playing phone tag for a month with a hb9, and a 15 minute conversation during which I find out she is 30, whereas I am 22, which I told her ( after her asking and using 'I asked you first!'). I set up the date regardless, we had great flow and many similar interests, setting at a place we both know well. Where do I go from here?

My Experience: Successfully pulled a 20 year old visiting parents from USF, at the restaurant which I work- I am 22. Definitely need to develop value, use charisma that is directed towards the parent/s as well- flirt a bit. Parents might not engage as well if you are outside their ideal age, especially significantly older.
