I saw a guy do this today.

From my experience, just find a place to sit. Usually there's a table with an empty chair and a cute girl on the other side of it. Ask if you can sit there, bust out your phone, use the wifi, and start a conversation.

There was an excellent FR on exactly this a month or so ago. Asked girl to watch his laptop while he stepped out. Try and find it, it was gold.

I did that once a couple of years ago in college. However I went to the bathroom.

Came back and made a joke about her having to fight a thief off or something similar to that. Made small talk.

Something I didn't know then that I do now is: people like you more if you get them to do a favor for you. It is a very good idea to get someone you are interested in pursuing to do a small favor for you.

First off, you have to be comfortable with everyone watching. In some ways, this can be a plus. You shouldn't be ashamed that everyone is watching. Once you internalize this, it'll show. So when you approach and say hi and she first looks into your eyes, she'll feel comfortable. The frame you should be coming from is this: what i'm doing is a little out of the ordinary, but it's super fun, so people should be watching, what of it! And honestly, if you do the approach right, from the outsider's perspective, it'll look like just two friends chatting. If you want to practice: talk to your friends just two notches above socially acceptable levels in high-traffic areas, like the train or bus. You'll quickly realize how much people don't give a shit about your conversation.

It's good that they're going in and out. Imagine that a girl sits next to you trying to do hw. You say hi, it goes well, and then the conversation lulls. That's, normally, where you'd escalate but it's a coffee shop and you both have work to do. Then comes the fucking awkward ass period where someone kind of "blips" out of the conversation. You can tell, their attention has turned to their work and they start leaving the conversation, if there was one at all. From her perspective, it's super weird. If you've made your intention clear, then she'll know you're attracted to her. She's sitting there like a little lamb, knowing a huge hungry wolf is sitting across from her. IT MAKES HER VERY UNCOMFORTABLE.

With daygame, you always want to leave on a high note. That's because, ideally, you're on an upward path of emotional progression that climaxes in sex. As with all game, you always want to be moving forward and in a coffee shop, you can only go so far. Hence, you should try to get her as far along the emotional progression as possible and then leave on a high note. Then you set up a date.

Therefore, one of you should be leaving. It allows for a short little, and fun, interaction and allows both y'all to get on with the day. If you're comfortable with approaching girls walking out and about, then pounce on girls who are on their way out of the coffee shop!

I have never tried it, but I can tell you that you only have 2 opportunities to approach. Okay maybe 3. While in line and she's in front/behind you, you should say "don't you hate it when you get your perfectly brewed cup of coffee.. Only to find they wrote your name horribly wrong? My name is Adam, and they always write Ali, Andy, or anything that starts with an A.. just never Adam. What's your name?" Boom, there's your convo. You can also go direct at the serving station, while she puts her cream and sugar. "Hey I find you really cute and I wanted to come say hi. What's your name?" Get her number. And finally if she's seated you can use same as the above and sit for a few minutes. If you've got the right eye contact where you're not looking around, the people in the store will not matter. Trust me when I say that you will tune them out.

It's up to you to have some game. You need to have some verbal skills and closing skills.
