Never khakis. For a coffee shop date it would be expensive jeans, button-up shirt, dress shoes. In cooler months it would include a sport coat.

Lots of people hate, you don't have to take everything that they say but the basics in their sidebar are right. Clothes that fit are key.

Depending on the location/activity a pair of chinos/jeans, button down shirt and some boots/brown shoes that aren't hideous/NICE (no running shoes) sneakers are fine. If it's hot, shorts+roll up your sleeves, wear some sneakers or boat shoes and you're good.

The simple thing is that you're dressed to the right level (not wearing a suit to go watch the World Cup in a bar, or wearing jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt to go to a diplomatic ball) and fitting clothes.

Also, fit helps. Did I mention you should wear clothes that fit you?
