How To Meditate? Which type of meditation is better?

I've got to say that mindfulness meditation is the best type for dealing with anxiety or negative types of emotions.

There's a couple of reasons that I think it's better than other forms of meditation.

Right now the most research is coming from the study of mindfulness meditation. This is because of Jon Kabat-Zinn's work in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. He's played a large part in meditation's growth in the last recent years.
Mindfulness meditation is good for dis-identification of your emotions. So instead of getting caught up in your emotions/thoughts it give you space to see them for exactly what they are simply thoughts and emotions.

You don't need to get carried away in them. You can just observe, non-judgmentally.

If you want to learn how to meditate I high recommend using guided meditations as training wheels and then moving off of them once you feel comfortable.

I prefer mindful meditation. The goal is to increase awareness and insight. To do it sit in a chair with your feet planted and your back against the chair, sitting. Put your hands on your thighs and pick a point in front of you. Focus on the point and count your breathes, every inhale is one. When you loss count or reach ten just start again. Let your mind go and observe your thoughts, watch them pass like clouds in the sky and try not to engage them. When you do, gently bring yourself back to the count.

That is mindful meditation, other meditations try to bring you to a happy place and is more about an emotional trip. Mindful meditation can be done anywhere anytime, sitting is just an anchor to bring you back, like the counting. Start with a 5 minute timer and work up.

Just sit quietly, without affirming or denying anything. Watch your thoughts as they arise and fall away. Focus on the breath, but don't make an effort. If your mind is quiet, observe that. If your mind is troubled, observe that.

look up a local Zen center. Some meditation groups/traditions involve a lot of strange back stories or some mythical shenanigans to buy into, Zen (typically) does not.

I can really recommend the app headspace! It really helped me practice meditation better. You will get 10 sessions for free when you download it at first!

Maybe the best place to ask this kind of question is /r/meditation. Down there there're a lot of people willing to help and you can also find a fairly good FAQ.

It's true: there're various kind of meditation practices, but to my knowledge all of them lead to a place of high awareness. Anyway the first step is always a training in concentration, so beginners are usually instructed to keep redirecting their attention on a fixed object (ie the breath). You can start right now, but remember: there're no special thoughts during the practice.

If you are consistent, you'll notice some benefits within a month. Well…for me it took a week, but your mileage may vary. ;)

To me, meditation is all about awareness. Now, to teach your mind to become more aware there are different methods, but basically it is the same. The way I understand it, sitting down and training your mind to be aware of thoughts and feeling is one part. The goal is to be aware throughout the day as well. The difficult part of meditation is changing the way you relate to thoughts and emotions. You learn that it is not the emotions and thoughts that are the problem, but rather the way you respond to them. Therefore, you can practice mindfulness, or awareness, with every activity you do. However, it is easier to focus when there are less distractions going on around you.

For instance, I'm working on reducing my anxiety. I sit 20 minutes a day and practice noting. Noting is about being aware of distracting thoughts as the pop up and make your mind wander. I'm focusing on my breath and whenever I catch myself focusing on something else, maybe what I'm having for dinner, I say to myself "Aha, there is that thought. Ok. It is neutral and I think it represents a kind of bored emotion. Ok, back to the breath". Because there are so many pits to fall into when you practice this I recommend using guided meditation. They will discuss common pitfalls and tell you how to relate to them. For instance, it is very common to hard on yourself for drifting a part. Being hard and punishing yourself is also thoughts and emotions and you should repeat the thought process of "Ok, I'm distracted by strict thoughts. They are not pleasant. They give me anxiety and stress. Back to the breath". Do you see how effective this is when it comes to seduction? You want to talk to a girl, you get anxious, and you start to feed your emotion with thoughts which makes the anxiety grow stronger which again makes your thoughts become more dominating and intense. With the practice of meditation you are aware of this and are able to break the loop by thinking "Ah, ok, I'm thinking all of these thoughts that are unpleasant, and I'm becoming anxious. Back to walking up to girl and saying hi."

I am only using headspace which is teaching me a lot. Meditation is a very fascinating journey where you learn to see yourself. Good luck!

as someone who has studied meditation of various forms, i gotta say there is no "best way" or even "how to". meditation can be the "traditional" way (think Buddhism) or it can be something like powerlifting. the important thing is you enjoy it and can stick to it.

that being said, its usually something you can do with a clear mind, not thinking about the bullshit of everyday life. you just gotta experiment and see what you like.

for me, its lifting in the gym. its something i can do by myself 5 days a week and clear the head as well as getting some physical activity.
