THIS MIGHT NOT BE NEW OR FRESH INFORMATION, but then again: what is?
I like to play chess. Specially 5-10 minute games. I've noticed that my best playing is when I scroll my window down just enough to not be able to see my opponent's rating (or time left for that matter). It's when I have no prejudice of who I have in front of me that I can fully tap into my raw chess power and throw down. Interestingly enough, I've beat way stronger opponents this way. Could it be that it had nothing to do with my understanding of their rating? That it was merely the fact that they saw my lower rating and diminished concentration due to it? Who knows? But it led me to an analogy with seeing extremely hot girls in the street.
I've always tried to move away from the Normal distribution scale (1-10 or 1-5) into the binary scale (1 = yes and 0 =no). But the prejudice is strong and it appears to me that the rating system is a way of nature telling me which of these (genetic) players have very high ratings in aesthetic beauty. Learning to ignore it is a choice, or the one that appears the most obvious, but I'm cultivating the idea that there is more than one rating -- not just the beauty rating**.
I've come to two conclusions so far: 1) Since we are all surviving strategies, we all have "grandmaster" rating in something. That's why it's so important to cultivate our "grandmaster" status, that way we won't be intimidated by other grandmasters. Just like chess, we all have it in us.
2) In Game theory there is an equilibrium reached where all strategies in an observable universe (a model) make something stable, always. The point in approaching aesthetic "grandmasters" is to notice what type of equilibrium they form with your whatever "grandmaster" status is. And seeing if that equilibrium is something stable for your moving forward... or upward (if you're an optimist!)
Care to add some more? Drop an opinion? I'm interested :)
**It's important to mention that the beauty rating is just a predominant one in our society because it is incredibly valuable to the visual marketing aspect of promotion. So we are CONSTANTLY bombarded with aesthetic grandmasters into everything positive and lose sight of everything else. Our approach anxiety is singled down to this, it seems so damn silly in theory and yet it's so engraved in our animal behavior...
EDIT: I think some of you are really missing the bigger picture, trying to start a pissing match with the validity of your definition (or examples) of game theory in relation to my allusion of it. Feels like that endless "decision theory" war behind Itzahk Gilboa and Amos Tversky... "Give me an axiom, and I'll design the experiment that refutes it.”
