How to quickly find that one topic they love talking about?

I have a couple default questions I'll ask to flesh out people's passions. Start very general, based on their appearance, then slowly get more intimate. People are without fail, always more interesting than they think they are.

"Do you play any sports?" - finds all the current/past passions for anything athletic ((Followup question -> "What was your favorite?"))
"Do you like music?" -> "What's one of your favorite songs right now?" or "Do you play any instruments?"
"Can you draw?" -> "What mediums?" - finds artistic passions
"Are you in school?" - intellectual passions and future dreams
"Where are you from?" -> "How long have you been here?" -> "What's it like over there?" - usually finds any travelers
"Can you dance?" -> "What kinds of styles?" -> "Where do you go for that around here?" -> "What do you like about it?"
"Do you do drugs?" - said jokingly and non-judgmentally. Finds psychonauts/ravers/hippies, but also finds genuine addicts that you should probably avoid.
"What kind of work do you do?" -> "You like it?" - finds career-focused people
"Do you have kids?" -> "How old?" -> "What're they into?" - if someone has kids, that's always a MAJOR passion of theirs.
"Do you play video games?" -> "What're you playing right now?" - finds gamers
Pick a general category and ask them something super simple about it -> Gauge their reaction -> Probe further or move on to another category -> Repeat.

Good catch-alls:
- "How's your day going."
- "What'd you do today." - (good to ask women)
- "What do you spend your time doing."
- "What kinds of projects are you working on right now?" - (good to ask men)
- "Tell me something you're looking forward to."
- "What do you do on your days off?"
- "Have you been here before?"

Try listening. People talk about the things they care about.

i dont see it here but " so what keeps you busy?". Most people don't understand the question, but that's a good thing, because now you can ask them everything at once.This is useful when you are trying to avoid "the interview".It covers more topics at once and saves face on an otherwise uninteresting person.

also this is a good time to look for non-verbals. try to see if you can guess witch one they would like talking about.(if they don't just jump it and start talking anyway)

Note:This works universally but isn't that good for an opener.IE you can use this on men,women and other creatures that speak the language but if you try starting a conversation with it, the follow up response (where you essentially ask everything at once) will throw them off and feel pushy.

You don't have common topics like food or travel that YOU are passionate about? If so...use them. I've only ever had 1 woman tell me she doesn't want to talk about food. Remember that you will do most of the talking at the beginning.
