Hi everyone, I'm a college student looking for some advice on what is expected/normal when one "grabs a drink" with a new girl.

You buy a drink.

You put it in between you.

You each grab it.

A struggle ensues.

Whoever ends with the drink in their hand is the winner.

NYC is a little different.

But in all seriousness, invite her out to meet you at like 8 or 9 at a chill lounge. Buy the first round, don't buy anything after that, and go for a move if she's feeling it at the end.

Make a move whenever you feel it's right. Don't feel obligated at any point. She's just another person you've shared some time with. If she sucks then just walk away. This stuff is easy.

Best time to go is anytime you're both free. Go somewhere convenient, though. If you both live in Brooklyn then aim for Brooklyn obviously. Try to aim somewhere either near your place or her's, just in case.

I always go dutch. There's no other way to do it, honestly. But if you're not sure how to establish that then just say that you'll get this round. Easy, done.

Having drinks has nothing to do with making your move. You make your move when you notice the right IOI.

Avoid paying for her drinks, that is to say, don't jump the gun and assume you're paying for hers. Especially if she doesn't seem interested.

This one is super easy, you can practice on literally anyone. Grab a drink with your guy friends, grab a drink with your girl friends, pal around. Once you've figured out the dynamic, doing it with a girl you're interested in is a piece of cake. Add some playful flirting wherever you find an appropriate fit.

Getting drinks is a friendly way of asking someone to come hang and destress from work. If you apply the right flirting, show you are interesting outside of work, and keep the conversation fun and interesting then you should look for your IOIs. Key is having things to talk about, understanding conversation flow and make the person you are talking to feel you are interested in them. There are no magic words that will make a girl drop her panties for you. (Before people jump on me, I am assuming OP has no experience with the dark art of NLP)

If all goes well you will be invited again, don't rush, have fun, be confident in yourself, and when you feel its good close on her. (This can mean a lot of things) Given you are still pretty new to this, I would suggest leading her into an ideal date secenario. You both talk about going somewhere fun together in great detail, then go there for a date. (The great detail part is very important)

Getting drinks is just getting drinks. There are no expectations placed on that besides the fact that you guys are going to be drinking alcohol. Making a move will be dependent on the group dynamics, where you are at with the girl or where you can take it when you're out having drinks with her.

Think about a situation where you "grab coffee" with someone. Replace the coffee with alcohol and the coffee shop with a bar or lounge. That's it.

Expect? Expect nothing. Except for maybe getting to know someone. As far as what you'll find out, who the eff knows? It's a crap shoot out there.

You're really over thinking this. You just invite her to join you for a drink somewhere, preferably somewhere with comfy seating.

Should I make a move at the end?

STOP thinking so much. There is no "should." Drop the expectations one way or the other. Maybe you really hit it off at drinks. Then she'll be encouraging a move. Maybe you get along but it's too early to make a move after drinks, and you can suggest somewhere else to go or suggest another meet-up later. Maybe you don't get along at all and that's that.

We aren't fortune tellers; there's no way to know if you should "make a move at the end." Though to be on the safe side, let's assume "no" if you're not sure.
