You did good by asking for her name first. Sounds like you rushed it and went for the PH# too soon too hard. Chances are there is no boyfriend, but that is the default "old reliable" reply for girls.

You're taking this too hard. You have to get rejected a lot before you succeed. And what happened? NOTHING. She walked away. You'll never see this girl again, who cares? You will have a totally fresh start with the next girl.

I think this is too direct and leaves little space open for conversations. You can start by saying she looks cute, then just talk. This can be about anything, depending on the environment/situation you're in. You will get to know eachother a little bit and create a (maybe sexual) connection. Show her you're this guy who likes to have fun and is not afraid of social pressure. After 5-10 minutes, ask her number or go for the insta date.

A number doesn't mean nothing, it's easy AF for her to give you her number and ignore your messages or give a fake number. Doing all of this doesn't even makes sense, why would she give you her number? You could be a crazy guy. You need to talk to her at first, get to know her a little better, build a bit of attraction, make her comfortable in your presence and then ask for it. I would change your strategy to something to something like this (just an example):

(You guys are in the grocery store) Grab two spices: - hey, excuse me, could you help me real quick? If she says yeah. - do you know which one is better to cook french food. If she doesn't know, then ask her if she doesn't like cooking, say you're trying to get into it. If she does, the ask her if she likes cooking and say the same thing, and start getting to know her, if you find something you both like, give her a high five, and then ask for the number.

I just gave an example for you to get the feel of it. But the truth is that you should calibrate at the moment, game is chaotic, just embrace it, build some rapport with the girl before asking for personal contact.

Cringey: just blurting out you want a girls number brings up her defenses, you scared her and she did the boyfriend excuse and left. Don't even introduce yourself, you're not a used car salesman, a hello will suffice, and perhaps a comment about something in her basket to start up a conversation. Girls have to deal with issues we don't....like wierdos, serial killers and stalkers, so you have to show them you're not in that category before they will chat with you.

It's strange because I get numbers often without even asking the name first. I don't think there is some certain method that works better than others. Confidence is key. Today I got a number literally by saying "sorry to bother you, but I thought you were so gorgeous, and I was wondering if could have your number." Maybe it would be better if I said you're gorgeous what's your name! Then blah blah blah can I have your number? Idk, Maybe the latter has better success rates. But I've gotten a lot of numbers being quick to the point. Any thoughts and replies definitely welcomed.
