I think the real answer is it varies by couple. On a first date, I'd rather pay but mostly because I don't like talking about money. If she said she'd rather split it, that's even better but I'm not about to ask. Sometimes it's uncomfortable letting other people pay.

The answer is, "it depends." It depends if you value gender equality and how cheaply you want to access sex.

There are certainly lots of women, where if you want to split the bill, you'll be instantly disqualified. If you want to have sex with someone in that category, you'll need to pay for it, like a prostitute. Game works both ways and gold-digging is a very valuable game.

If you can attain to the idea of gender equality, you'll see the only correct answer is you pay for what you eat. You aren't "taking a girl out", you are both out on a date. You happen to be eating. The only reason you'd pay for both portions is if you choose a really expensive place and your date can't afford it.

Maybe you're a doctor dating a student and you want to take her to a place requiring a reservation (terrible, terrible game, but it's an edgecase.) Maybe you visit a drive through, spend a whole $15 and it's easier to swipe just one card. Still push for a reimbursement.

If she can't afford her own meal, something is really, wrong. If she complains about buying her own meal, just leave right there. There are so many women out there that understand this. If you happen to date one that doesn't ... ask yourself, "Is she a prostitute?"

Odds are, dinner won't be the last thing you buy her :)

It varies, but i've rarely encountered a woman who respected a dude who split the bill. That's more for an established relationship where you're equal in the game.

I always pay for a first date unless the girl is absolutely set on paying for herself. I feel like that lays good groundwork showing that you are open to taking care of a girl and taking her out. Beyond that you can set your own rules for it, but always paying is going to run you into debt pretty quick, especially if you're dating a lot.

Edit: don't be afraid to have her pay if she offers. That happened to me a few times. Sometimes women with money (established, in her 30s) will want to pay.
