so typically i do not like asking, but one scenario where i always ask is if im having a conversation with a girl at a bar and i'm on the fence about how its going.

Like for instance if you feel shes average in terms of her reception / interest, and you feel the convo going stale, bring it up as a direct question. If she says no, then ask her if she thinks you're attractive. If she says anything other than no, the ask her "so what are we doing here, lets go on the dance floor"

Your feelings are normal. You probably have some fear or anxiety over asking (inferring) someone of the opposite sex what you want. The more you do it he easier it gets.
