It’s going to be hard, and it’s going to take a long time. But ultimately you’ll be stronger on your own. The ring gave you a false sense of security that you never had in the first place. Let it go. I still have mine, but it’s buried somewhere in one of my storage crates and I never think about it (I suspect if I throw it away, I’ll regret it many years from now when I’ve moved on.)

It’s like buckling your seat belt every time you drive, until one day you realize your seat belt wasn’t attached to the seat. She could have decided to leave at any time and pulled the rug out from under you. She didn’t follow the vows you agreed to when you got married and planned to stay together forever, so the ring itself is meaningless.

But YOU are still full of meaning, and purpose, and love. But first you’ve got to love yourself. Get a new piece of jewelry, a watch, a chain, something you can wear everyday that symbolizes this new era in your life. Hell, get a tattoo. And don’t forget to also work out, get in great shape because it’ll not only prepare you to start dating again, but also help you stop being depressed. Good luck.

This might sound weird, but fuck it. I had a sort of a funeral service for my wedding ring. I went out with some friends into the woods, dug a hole with a ring of stones around it. Buried the ring deep in the ground. Wrote a letter to the person who used to be my wife, read it, burned it, then let the wind take it away. Covered the hole. Drank some beers with my friends and called it a day. It did wonders for me.

Yeah, I still have things that trigger memories and make me sad, but I’m not nearly as grieved as I was. You’re gonna have to go through some shit, but you will make it out on the other side. If you’re not going to the gym, get there. If you have a faith, dive into it. Work on taking care of yourself and don’t worry for a minute what she’s doing. Remember that this is the choice that she made. Every person on this planet has to live with the consequences of the choices that they make.
