Personnally I do, and I've realized that it is easier to do than it seems. With practice I figured that the targets were moving because they were up to something and would barely have a little time so I went with a direct approach and a false time constraint. Straight with a compliment, then ask her name and see if she asks mine back. I pay attention to her body language to see if she's being bothered. Then I try something like "you look like someone that enjoys coffee as much as I do!", ask them their favorite coffee shop, and try to run a fun conversation for a few minutes.

Going indirect, I've had no success in streets so far.

I practice with dudes as well and made some new friends that way. The other day I complimented a guy on how well he was rocking his Hawaian shirt and we ended up going for coffee for 2 hours right after. Turned out we were from the same part of France (a region fairly small), shared a lot of similar interests. That made my afternoon!

Walking stops are the hardest but The sidewalk becomes your domain .they can also come in handy in really big venues at night. Ultimately you don't need it but it's an nice option

depends on the speed at which they walk.

If they walk slower than the crowd, you can talk stop them.
