Start squirreling away cash now in case you'll need a war chest. Do it in small untraceable amounts like with taking $50 cash back when buying groceries with a debit card once a week. Don't put this in an account in your name, either just keep the cash somewhere safe or get a trusted sibling/friend to set up an account that you deposit to. Anything in your name can be found in discovery.

I too waited about 4 years after I knew the marriage was done before actually filing, but in my case it was to wait til my kids were more able to handle time away from each of us as they were very young at the time. During that time I just gray rocked the ex, she could rant and rave and I'd just shrug, walk away, and do whatever the hell I wanted to do anyway. May be a good approach for you to take as well.

Start to separate your joint assets, debts and credit. Get new credit cards in your name only and close as many joint accounts as you can . Same with bank accounts. Your goal is to be in a situation where you have sole control over your finances.
