Nursing is a female dominated space, discrimination against men is bound to happen. Several of my buddies are nurses, they each say that the women nurses tend to be quite rude.

I noticed that there isn’t as many male nurses in the British NHS in comparison with drs, the wards I have worked on there have been maybe 2 male staff members on the shift. The management is rarely male the band 6 and 7 on the wards tend to be female.

They are hugely discriminated against.

Many many female patients request female medical staff for anything intimate. Male patients do not often request male medical staff for intimate procedures.

Because of this a female nurse is more useful to a hospital. She can wash both male and female patients but men do not tend to wash female patients. Also if they wash in teams you often, most cases, get 2 female medical staff washing patients but never 2 males washing a female patient.

The reason there are so few if any nurses at doctors surgeries in the UK is because of a need to do cervical smears. Female nurses can do this unchaperoned but male nurses can do it but they need a chaperone, so more expense.

Also the patient can also point blank refuse to have male nurse do it.

Men can choose to have male medical staff for intimate procedures in the UK but from what I see they do not tend to bother too much.

One way you can help male medical staff, as a male, is to request male medical staff for intimate procedures.

As for paediactrics, there is a desperate need for more male nurses to connect with male children but again they are hugely discriminated against.

I have heard from doctors that parents very often request not to have male medical staff examine their daughters.

Discrimination against male nurses was NHS policy but now is technically illegal.

It still happens of course but indirectly.

One of the reasons no effort at all is being made to increase the number of male nurses is because they are less useful in hospital. In the UK it is stuck at 10% and has been for 20 years.

Male nurses also get paid less than female nurses.

Some male nurses say they are expected to do more heavy lifting even if its not their job.

I've yet to see free schooling incentives for males in a female dominated industry. With shortages of nurses you'd think they'd offer this like they would in a male dominated field that they can't fill.

I’ve heard a couple stories about how angry / disrespectful people are to male nurses assuming they are nurses for “the wrong reason” very gross and not something that would be said to a woman. Same thing happens to male gynecologists too unfortunately

Im not a nurse but I work in healthcare with nurses. Yes men are discriminated against and it's a hostile work environment for men. Females can talk about anything, talk about sex, talk bad about co-workers, but if men did that they go to HR real fast. The men walk on egg shells and the females try to get any man fired that they don't like.

Females hate the beta males that are using their positions and money to sleep with different women. If you are not a beta bucks (aka using your money to support a woman), they are trying to get you fired.

Pro tip: avoid healthcare or any job that is female dominated.

Male nurse here. In my training on a children's ward they openly discussed how hot the 16 year old boy was. Nowadays I work my shifts alone, can't stand it anymore. Ill find another profession soon I hope

They're expected to do more work, but the nurses and patients tend to be less hostile to them. Older nurses especially are less likely to throw you under a bus than a young female nurse.

There was a story I had seen awhile ago on here, I think of a male nurse who was constantly cat called on by his female co workers and touched inappropriately. It might be worth looking for. Of course its only anecdotal and not serious numbers but I'm sure it happens more often than one person.

Male nurse here.

It goes both ways. You will find women in the field that strongly dislike male nurses. You will also find tons of female nurses that GREATLY appreciate having a guy around.

You will have lots of sexist doctors that treat you better than he treats female nurses.

You will have many patients that assume you are a doctor.

You will have many women refuse to have you as their nurse in fields like L/D.

While I was subject to much discrimination as a male in nursing education, my female patients actually strongly prefer me to female nurses. My female nursing instructors told me that I would make a good doctor but not a good nurse. Perhaps, this is partly because I held a B.S. in Biochemistry. My female patients, however, like me because I have the characteristics of a good doctor which gives them more confidence in my competency than otherwise.

So I am not a man but I am a masculine lesbian in healthcare in the US. People will basically treat you like you’re a pervert if you look or act masculine. The majority of patients I see will request female staff but if I walk in it’s all “oh not that one” LOL. My few male colleagues frequently get pushed out of rooms even though they are some of the most competent and kind providers I know.

I completely understand personal preferences when it comes to intimate exams but I have witnessed far more disgusting comments come from my female colleagues than my male ones and our office is pretty balanced gender-wise. People are so quick to assume every man has nefarious intentions when they’re literally just trying to do their job and go home. Don’t even get me started on the sexual harassment so many male healthcare workers and patients get subjected to…but they’re discouraged from ever having any negative thoughts about it
