A few nights ago, I almost got into a fight with someone over the way he was treating my friend.
I was verging toward escalating the conflict into something physical, but at the last minute I backed down and let it go because I could only imagine getting into a fight on the road and having the other guy call the cops and being drawn into a lot of ugly shit.
This has happened a few times, wherein I'm tempted to escalate with someone over something but I hate that I back down eventually out of fear of consequences, whether it be a report in my name or losing my nose or having the cops called.
This especially has been affecting me since I wanted to jump in for my friend - I arbitrated but didn't physically escalate.
Am I being a coward or am I just taking the phrase 'pack loyalty' a bit far unnecessarily?
