This sounds like the dude got pissed by the fact that he was hit and snapped. It's a pretty primal reaction to hit back and it shouldn't be surprising that in the heat of the moment he couldn't hold back but he also understood his wrongdoing immidietly. For her to immidietly default to "he is abusing me" sounds like complete lack of empathy on her part. This isn't anime, violence isn't funny and words cannot simply undo things. Don't hit if you don't want to get hit back.

I remember many years ago when a friend divorced his wife. It was both of their second marriage. Her first one ended due to domestic violence. He related that in his first marriage, obviously they faught, but he never, ever wanted to harm her. Not so with the second wife. He said she would he so nasty, mean and belittling when she got mad that he had to walk away. He knew if he stayed, he would eventually punch her. He divorced, and is with wife #3, no desire to punch her either.

The dude walked away, stewed, and retaliated FAR WORSE than the original offense. This wasn't a "I got hit and my immediate reaction was to defend myself" situation.

she hit him out of a reflex from being tickled bc being tickled literally hurts. he hit her solely bc he was angry. like there’s obviously a fucking difference.

if it was a reflex like hers, then it’d be fine bc you can’t blame someone for a reflex. but she literally says she had time to go up to him and apologise and ask if he’s alright so clearly it wasn’t a reflex.
