Wild. Glad nobody ever told me such things growing up. I used to get into fights with my older sister when we were kids. We both started doing martial arts at a young age, so it's to be expected I guess. That stopped once I got much bigger than her.

Yeah this is not "self-defense". Sounds like he retaliated with a way harder slap than was necessary. She was still in the wrong, but so was he, and two wrongs don't make a right. The mature thing to do would be to not attack someone that is apologizing and be the bigger person. That said, its not like the husband was acting like an unforgivable monster either.

This is a simple case of an altercation getting out of hand in a way that ultimately didn't end up being a big deal. The internet definitely didn't need to know about it. I'm sure these are perfectly loving and healthy people who made momentary mistakes that will go on to have a great relationship.

That said, some of these commenters are insane. "Never okay to hit a woman?" Really? Even if you see her in the process of committing murder/rape?

Based on how I interpret this, I would not call that self-defense (if it went down the way I would imagine based on this), though I am aware that there are way broader definitions than mine. As both her and her partners accounts would be affected by the internalized environment of misandry (besides all kinds of other influences, of course), even hearing both sides would not necessarily help us imagine what actually went down (e.g. downplaying or denying domestic violence against men). The comments implicitly and explicitly reject any male self-defense however, so it does not matter.

In general, if possible, do not meet violence with violence. When necessary, do not go beyond what is necessary. Do your best not to confuse self-defense with self-justice. This goes for any sex or gender.

Conditions for self-defense:

Imminent Threat – The danger must be immediate or ongoing. You cannot claim self-defense for a past threat or a future hypothetical danger.
Necessity – The use of force must be the last resort; there should be no reasonable alternative to avoid harm (e.g., escape, de-escalation).
Reasonableness – The person defending themselves must have a genuine and reasonable belief that they are in danger. Some jurisdictions apply a subjective standard (what the defender believed at the moment), while others use an objective standard (what a reasonable person would have believed in that situation).

Neither of this was the case.

It simply objectively WASN'T self defense, there is no discussion to be had on this point.

Imo, as described, it sounds less like self defence and more like an instantly regretted revenge slap. Her slap was in self defence against tickling.

that was self defense on her part. she knew she was in the wrong and tried to make amends. he responded by slapping her. the way y’all are defending him is insane. grown adults arguing about who started it.

are you guys brain dead? the slap was obviously an accident whereas the boyfriend retaliated on PURPOSE. Do yall think that's how you're supposed to treat the supposed love of your lives?
