I was mugged and beaten severely before my sister’s wedding. My parents were mad that I ruined the wedding pictures for her. That’s one of many examples where they favored her well being over mine. They paid for her college and protected her in every way and I was told to be a man and fend for myself.

I've seen fathers do videos where they full on admit they treat their daughters better than their sons because she's his 'princess'. It just makes me so sad, imagine being a child and your dad favouring your sister based on nothing but her gender. This also later creates an entitled princess that nobody wants to deal with and are the type to threaten a teenage boy for simply dating his daughter. I've always hated girl dads.

Some parents even tell the boys they shouldn't rape women (as if that is not obvious) , in less extreme examples you have parents telling their sons to respect women or to be a gentleman, but the advice for daughters is just to be yourself no matter what anyone says, I find that difference of advice given to sons and daughters sexist, and one form of sexism that is very normalized in society.

I can't remember what book it was, but it talked about how parents after a few years start to sit further away from boys and generally give them less physical affection than girls. We also start to see differences in how we socialise boys and girls from age 4. I think society has this image of 'masculinity' that can be very harmful to men, and it's even bleeding into parents relationships with their kids, so they are less affectionate with their boys.

I am a woman, but I realise many also hold up this standard of what is 'masculine'. We all need to work together to set a new standard of what masculinity is in a world where women work. Women also have to unlearn harmful patriarchal ideas, they are the ones raising men. The status quo does hurt everyone, and the gender wars online made certain bad actors extremely rich (when really, we should be focusing on fighting those people together).

IDK guys, sorry I'm just popping in to have a look around because I've been thinking about this all a lot this week. I do have male platonic friends who I hug hello/goodbye, compliment, will put a hand on their shoulder, a lot of love for them. These men are not at all 'masculine' as the world see's it, they are emotional and open, vulnerable and always working to help others, they have a lot of friends and community. I hope everyone who is just looking for loving, thoughtful friendships and support find each other, no matter their gender.

Not just the US, certainly the same story in the other side of the planet too. The difference mostly being parents being blatantly abusive both physically and verbally to sons and coddle their daughters and act on pretty much every one of their whims.

The same is true in China. There is a tradition in China called "raising sons in poverty and daughters in wealth" (穷养儿，富养女). In life, sons are given less material and care to cultivate their ability to endure hardship; and daughters are given more material support and care to prevent them from being easily deceived by other boys with sweet words and a little gift.

I've seen videos of straight fathers beating their son in public while only wagging a finger at his daughter even though they were both misbehaving and it's so disgusting.

It happened with my dad too. He's often distant emotionally with my grandmother i.e. his mom compared to his sisters who often both are much more open. He told me my grandmother treated him quite formally then and still does today. He genuinely has to place he can express his pain.

Lol my sister got all the attention and nice things despite being a manipulative spoiled twat. I got all the beating gs and held responsible for all the bad shit she did because I was supposed to "supervide" her while getting in trouble for telling if she was doing something wrong (whining/tattling) amd getting hit if she got hurt of her own stupidity (yet ai couldn't stop her or go off the property).

Nothing is ever a woman's fault, and it's your job and a man to be the one accountable and responsible for everything because poor woman.

As someone who is South Asian, but grew up in the west, culture definitely plays a huge role. In many South Asian cultures, parents favor boys far more and the girls are "second class citizens," who need to cater to their brothers the same way their mom would.

Actually daughters raised by the mother in most cases treated worse than sons, because they usually see the daughter as more of a burden than a help mate in the home. Sons raised under a mother don't have best outcomes either, and used in service to perform tasks or be under her control to be a chivalrous boy into a nice guy, seeking her approval. But they are rewarded with good boy affirmation and coddling displays of affection. Compared to fathers who are harsher on sons than daughters, as fathers are far more protective and supportive to their daughter as they care about her safety that is more fragile than the son's safety.

Many family councilors say a mother and daughter relationship is a push and pull dynamic where each has feelings of unfair treatment and resentment towards each other and actt out to break the bond of mother and daughter. Punishment is more given to the daughter by the mother than the father and daughter will offer seek father for protection and understanding from the father over mother.

The reason for this is because if your son isn’t tough the world’s gonna chew him up and spit him out. Most men I know who got coddled end up living in their parents basement and terminally alone.
