Find yourself a good paralegal who's worked with the court you're in. They cost a fraction of the price of an attorney, they can help you fill out and file the paperwork, including knowing how the judges like to see things worded, and they know the judges and other attorneys and so can give you some gouge on how they are.

Also, make sure that you understand if and what you can pay for and how. In California, pro SE can't use community property to pay for legal fees and they can't request legal fees from the other side.

I did okay. Divorce-lite since it was just child custody/support. Probably did better pro se, actually.

Always remember: no one cares about your case more than you.

People give attorneys too much credit imo. They're really only good at trial imo. Half of them are below average and a quarter of them were in the bottom quarter of their class - which one are you getting?

95%+ of cases settle out of court, so you didn't even need a trial attorney.

I will say though, in closing, be sure pro se is what you want to do because it is likely that you won't be able to find an attorney afterwards (they don't want to be part of the dumpster fire or they conflict out). I couldn't even retain the first 10 attorneys I consulted with following having a TRO thrown at me.

I went with a solo practice. So, somewhere between. I have zero evidence to support this, but I felt a larger firm would be more focused on throughput that maximizes profits and minimizes effort while a solo firm would be more focused on their own short term goals (that new boat) while working half weeks. More head room in other words.

My lawyer was well-organized, made a few mistakes, didn't quite have the polish of a large firm, but generally tracked everything well and listened to my strategies. I did better than expected.

So, so goddamn many attorneys suffer from air-traffic-control disease.

They only, I mean ONLY hear what they expect to hear. And they only gather the information they gathered the last dozen times.

My own attorney fucked up two consecutive filings.

JFC dude, we've been over this a dozen times. She doesn't live with me, the house is community property, her income is community property and I fucking SURE have a right to see it.

These filings make no goddamn sense! We've been over this ten times! WTF is wrong with you!?!
