Okay here are my issues. The article says “Then there are movies highlighting just how bad men can be (and yes, some men can behave very badly).” And links an article on the Epstein files. If this was truly a progressive, gender neutral article, they would have clarified that all humans can act badly. Like, who’s currently the only person incarcerated for her part in the Epstein case?

Second, it says it tackles the everyday struggles facing men, and goes on to describe how they work as a team. Men don’t really have issues working as a team. We almost universally prefer it 😅 They’ve just implanted a false narrative to describe a positive fact of men. Camaraderie isn’t a struggle for typical men.

Men don’t need praise for doing the right thing for their friends and family, like letting friends crash on our couch or helping a coworker. These aren’t masculine traits, that’s just called being “kind”. Which is what aalllll humans should strive for, imo. Men need supports that effectively tackle our issues and concerns, not a glimpse of what life could be like if we were herded like cattle in a death march.

Idk, maybe I’m being cynical, it’s been a long week.

There's no such thing as positive or negative masculinity, it's just masculinity- everything forward in logos, practicality, and the physical, with subtlety in expression.

Just read the article and as a disclaimer I've read the book many times and it's one of my favorites.

The person who wrote the article hasn't read the book, or at least can't distinguish between the book and the film.

The speed and number of people walking is incorrect in the article.

The premise of a 'civil war' is not mentioned in the book.

They fail to distinguish between Bachman and King, despite King distinguishing between them, saying that Bachman books were those written on angry days. The entire Bachman books are very angry books.

'motivates Americans to work hard to rebuild the economy and make our country the very top of the world again.' - Yeah that ain't in the book either.

'realistic depiction of positive masculinity I’ve ever seen.' - no there are plenty of others. The reviewer is ignorant.

If you read the book it's mainly young men talking (and in the case of Garrety) thinking about young men things and the naivety of young men. They talk about girls, school, the stupidity of signing up, the horror seeing what is going on around them. King writing the book as Bachman was writing the book as a reflection of young men in the American-Vietnam war. The book and the effects of violence on young men is a good allegory on that.

In summary, the reviewer is ignorant and doesn't know what they are talking about. Those who can do, those who can't teach and review.

The book is good, and I've very much enjoyed Rage and the Running man also by Bachman.

Read the book, watch the film, laugh at the reviewer.

Upon reading that title, I was momentarily baffled, as my first thought on hearing that phrase is the title of a Stephen King novel- but then that passed, as I realized that obviously couldn't be the case, since that book is anything BUT positive.

But apparently it is. I'd say that I can but hope it's a lousy adaptation- that the story of human sacrifice via bread and circuses for the sake of a totalitarian government in the unspoken name of male disposability isn't actually being lauded as positive- but it isn't, is it? It really is "suffer and die for our comfort and amusement, like a good slave would".

Anyone able to make my day by telling me I'm wrong?

Stephen King is a clown and I refuse to see this film. He used to be ok and I have read this book. But his comments as of late have shown his true colors.

Both toxic masculinity and toxic feminism exist. The difference is that the latter is not acknowledged as existing by almost any woman and mainstream media. They don't think that womanly things and stuff done for the benefit of women can do harm/be bad, which is obviously BS.
