It's extremely gynocentric.

I would not classify it as matriarchal, or patriarchal. "Patriarchy is a social system where men hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege, and control of property."

Primary power: men Predominant political leadership: men Moral authority: both Social privilege: extremely favoring women Control of property: both

Other factors: law enforcements, favoring women. Court bias, greatly favoring women.

I guess we could really break down a full analysis on what things favor each. But, I don't believe that enough power and authority swings in one particular way, for us to conclude either. Yet, the more you break down stuff, it becomes clear, quickly, that it's certainly greatly favoring women. But favor isn't power and authority

The manosphere wisely calls this women-centered systemic mode of operation by its proper term "gynocentrism", and not a matriarchy. Historically, most or many civilizations and those considered most successful and thriving were patriarchical. Society can officialy, politically and legally or primarily be patriarchical and at the same time hold gynocentrist values within certain contexts / domains. This could also manifest in "reverse sexism" (affirmative action) widely permanent in modern welfare / progressive states, where women's equality of outcome becomes as deliberate and official policy of the state, while the state could still be "patriarchical". Matriarchical (legally or officialy) advanced civilizations are very rare historically. The current civilization in the west is republicanism, liberal democracy with strong emphasis on egalitarianism, which is why some associate this with an official matriarchy. In some ways, especially from an essentialist point of view this could be true, in that modern progressive regimes are more feminine by design and less masculine. Femininity here means stereotypical characteristics of women - like emotionality, indirectness, youthfulness, volatility, softness, maternal inclinations, and conformism. This is of course a lengthy debate in political sociology, and politics and leadership studies.

I tried explaining this to a feminist male friend once, and he just wouldn't hear it.

I explained that if a boy is being raised by a single mother, an aunt, goes to school where all authority figures are women, and he has no experience with any sort of male authority, he is indeed experiencing a Matriarchy. It's illy to say he's experiencing a patriarchy where no male rule is affecting him a any point in his life.

And then every show on TV, or just about every form of entertainment or talk show / news is female focused, just further solidifies my point.

Honestly the gender of who is ruling is irrelevant and I don't get why people can't see that.

It is the ideology that is mainstream that is popular. Currently the pendalum has swung very far.

Women have got their rights and the benefits of tradition. Men get the consequences of tradition yet are shamed for wanting the benefits of it. Women are treated like passive angels who deserve the world whilst men are expected to care for, maintain and protect them whilst expecting nothing back but also to not be in charge.

You might be confusing visibility with power.

Yes, elementary schools have a lot of female teachers (depending on where you live). Yes, some news channels have a lot of female presenters. Yes, Disney Animation has had more female protagonists than male protagonists in recent years.

But I don't think boys automatically conclude that girls are more important just because they have female teachers or see female protagonists. Girls spent decades growing up with male presidents, male historical figures, male action heroes and male protagonists without concluding that women were unimportant.

More importantly, I think you're taking a legitimate concern and attaching it to a conclusion that doesn't follow.

Boys struggling without fathers? Absolutely Boys facing educational challenges? Yes, especially if their environnement outside of school isn't balanced Boys needing positive role models? Never been truer.

Therefore society is a "quasi"-matriarchy? That's where the argument loses me.

No, ancient Egypt was not a matriarchy. It was a deeply patriarchal society where political and military power were usually concentrated in men. [1, 2, 3, 4]

You can’t just take a woman and make her a leader then say you now have a matriarchy. Matriarchy and patriarchy are actually not binary. There are articles you can read that go into it further but even if a woman briefly was the leader of a civilization it can still be a deeply patriarchal system- when it’s been built by men to favor men, and maintains female subjugation as the standard and assumed conventional model, with disadvantages in economics and social roles, women cannot be said to be running the circus. Currently women are 27% of congress I believe and we have never had a female president. Most business are run by all male boards and leadership and men still have control of women’s reproductive rights, voting rights, and domestic role as caregiver or weaker sex
