The biggest problem with the gun controversy is that the solutions being offered are tantamount to using a sledgehammer to drive a tack into the wall.

There are people who should never, ever be trusted behind the wheel of a motorized vehicle. Ever. They're dangerous enough that there is no sense in risking allowing them to even learn how to drive anything. It's unquestionably true that those people shouldn't be permitted to control a vehicle- yet nobody has proposed laws banning purchase of motorized vehicles... not even bigger ones, faster ones... not even the types of vehicles more likely to be involved in accidents causing multiple deaths. It would be ridiculous to apply such a widespread, blanket "solution" to the problem of dangerous drivers. Instead, the behavior itself is addressed directly with the application of traffic laws.

Applying a widespread, blanket "solution" to the problem of individuals misusing guns is the same. It is an act of imposing on the innocent a penalty earned by the guilty. Whether ownership rights in general is a men's issue or not, the issue of distributing undeserved guilt among a general population in response to emotions elicited by an individual's heinous crime should be very familiar to this group.
That's the manner in which the imposition (by executive order, as the left seems to have gotten impatient with the legislative process) of new regulations is currently being excused.

My husband has PTSD care of his mother's abuse.

Where we live (Australia), the military were afraid of what would happen if they accepted him (ie put a gun in his hands and started issuing orders), so he never became a soldier like he wanted to be.

When he finally got to the point of getting his gun licence for paintball (they're legally defined as an air rifle, IIRC), he had to get a letter from a psychiatrist stating that he wasn't a danger because his mental illness is on the government records.

An irritant, sure, but I absolutely understand why it is considered necessary.

Living with someone who has PTSD can sometimes be scary. Luckily I never had to be scared of my dad, but my uncle held his wife at gunpoint when she got up to get some water one night. She had bumped something, which woke him up and caused him to go into flashback mode. She was terrified. :/ stories like that are pretty common in the military.

How are men being singled out by this? But most importantly, how would this even be a case of clear cut discrimination? It's a complex issue. I personally don't believe mentally unstable people of any stripe should be allowed to own firearms, regardless of what their previous occupation was—and I'm not less of an MRA for that.

Hell, how many of my fellow Europeans do you think would be in favor of people owning guns at all? Are we all misandrists because of that?

I almost hate to be the one to do this but: this is not a fucking men's rights issue.
