97 cents on the dollar isn't a crazy thing to claim (unlike the 70 cents on the dollar that obama claimed this election).

Once you are around 97 cents - the signal to noise in the data gets really difficult to make any claim with certainty. Some demographics, notably young educated women in some fields, make more money on the dollar- but I think we're close enough to stop the oppression olympics and start thinking about how things might be made to be more fair in individual cases (would it be practical to require employers to publish their employees salaries? there are cons, but among the pros is that it empowers every employee to negotiate effectively on their own behalf). And if women think that they have it bad, they should google the effect of being unattractive or short or from a racial minority or having a regional accent on salary.

Even though I am sort of defending your wife's statement here, I have to say that it is a sad day when an attempt to be nice results in being required to go to reddit in a search for statistics. This (admittedly one isolated) story doesn't make it sound like a happy marriage.
