If you want more peer-reviewed quality work, search your library for articles about "hasty generalizations" (you wont find anything about apex fallacy). The apex fallacy is really just a particular kind of hasty generalization. So what you can do is cite the Smith, then explain that the apex fallacy is a kind of hasty generalization, then cite something peer reviewed that discusses hasty generalizations. That should give you a pretty good grounding.

There might be something about hasty generalizations in Dennis Rohatyn's "The Fallacies of Doublespeak".

You'd be better off going to your campus library to see if you can find a scholarly article on the Apex fallacy.

It's going to be difficult for you to find articles otherwise, imo.

Depending on what your paper is about (i.e. is it about examples of the Apex fallacy, or what? How do tropes and memes play into it?) there might be better avenues to approach it from.

I would suggest going to your library and finding a way to search scholarly articles that deal with the fallacy of composition, which is really the generalized version of the apex fallacy.

To access peer-reviewed material, I would look for papers that quantitatively compare heterosexual female and male mating preferences. I recall coming across a statistic that something like 80% of males were judged "below average" by women. That might have been an OkCupid study, therefore not peer-reviewed; but in any case, finding this kind of information would help to substantiate the Apex fallacy. I would look in the sociology or psychology literature.

The apex fallacy is for lack of a better word a term derived from a combination of fallacies. It is the fallacy by composition to say the majority of those in power being men implies men as a group being in power, and the fallacy of division to say men as a group being in power means each individual man is in power/has power.

apex "fallacy" : The very top of the pyramid is men. And men are at the very bottom of the pyramid. And women are in the middle. Women look at the pyramid and assume they should attack the tip of the pyramid.

MREs look at the pyramid and say "let's attack the middle!"
