Patriarchy: most power is held by men. The average man has more power than the average woman and most top-level decisions are made by men. Society is designed around a male default.

Power is harder to define as many different things go into it, but money is a good proxy for it in any capitalist societies.

Patriarchy is a society run by hierarchy. Someone is at the top and has all the power. Then there is someone below that and then someone below that and so on. It tends to be enforced by physical, political or economical power.

Matriarchy is a society run by compassion. Caring for the weak is the highest priority and the whole society comes together to make sure everyone is cared for. Its a collaboration instead of a hierarchy. Everyone has their own work to do but people are mostly equal.

patriarchy - society ruled solely by men matriarchy - society ruled solely by women
