This challenge isn't giving anyone abs, and can end up doing more harm than good, especially for beginners. I suggest anyone considering this "challenge" check out this thread over at /r/Fitness.

That aside, my musings on fitness are that far too many people rely on misinformation in a vain attempt for unrealistic results, only to end up disappointed. My personal fitness goals are health and strength first, aesthetics second. I'm a beginner aerialist looking to up my strength and flexibility, so I lift heavy, eat healthy, and stretch as often as I can.

Honestly I think the challenges like this are stupid and a way for people to feel good about themselves without actually doing anything. Sooo many people sign up to do them, but I rarely see anyone complete the 30 days. They either A. Never begin or B. Do like the first week and then quit. Plus, it focuses on such a limited range (abs only) when you really need a whole body program for health.

BUTTTT that said if it inspires someone to change their lifestyle who am I to say it's stupid? I sincerely hope I am wrong :)

This isn't promoting a good thing. This is promoting a bad thing. I would never recommend this to ANYONE, EVER. Having abs is purely the result of having low enough body fat. Everyone has abs. When you work out your abs you only make them larger so they are more defined when you have a low body fat. This will not magically give you abs and is terrible terrible advice.

My advice? Lift heavy, eat enough to support muscle growth or a recomp, work on mobility. Women can't gain serious muscle in a short amount of time, it takes years of consistent work.

While I agree with you on one point (that lower body fat is the way to go in terms of waistline), I disagree that working your abs doesn't do a lot without that low body fat.

Someone who's 10-20 lbs away from their goal weight would still see some tightening of the waist from doing an ab workout. Not saying they'd get abs like in the picture linked above, but change is change and even a small change is motivating for people, as long as it's perceptible.

I never said you shouldn't work your abs? I said this programming is terrible advice. I said it is directly linked to lower body fat, which is fact. Having a strong core is one of the most fundamental assets to an overall strong and healthy body. Having abs show is low body fat, working them makes them stronger/larger. If you're not in a low enough BF% then your abs will not show. You should still do core work even if you're body fat isn't low enough for them to show. I never said that. You can easily hit your abs with all of the compound lifts which can eliminate a lot of direct core work for individuals.

I see. You left out the word "show" from your first comment. Miscommunication, all good.

Agree on all points.

i'm not a fitness expert but this seems like a really rapid increase for reps? i have been more diligent about doing my squats lately though and hopefully i can stick with it for the rest of the month, even if i don't do this particular workout.

[–]rredfox[S] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I thought so too. I suppose that's why it'd a challenge lol

[–]swift-heart1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

there are certain users here like /u/eatplaycrush who are very knowledgeable about fitness/nutrition and i would recommend consulting her about changes to your exercise routine

but if this challenge gets women to be more active then it's not all bad :)

To anyone looking to build up their abs, I would recommend a ab wheel with either a decline or weights(I strap plates to my back with paracord). Certainly much better than this kind of exercise.

I started yesterday, SO was coaching me on proper technique. Then decided he'd do it too. By last night it hurt to laugh. I needed something to get back on track with a workout, this seems to help.

I have a series of exercises that I do at home that target different areas, but they all target the core. I'll do kettlebell swings (25lbs) one day, squats another day, we have an ancient soloflex that I will use, etc. The kettlebell swings, with my new 25lber, is really working on my entire torso!

Hubs and I are both fairly busy, but I want to see if he'll start working out with me a couple of times a week. Our schedules line up now, so all of our time off is time off together. He's also wanted to work out a bit as well, and it's easier when you've got a buddy system going.

[–]dmitche-1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Im going to incorporate this into my workout

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm adding this to my work out too.
