I don't think you entirely get it

[–]-littlebee- 9 points9 points9 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

subtext "I LOVE DRAMA"

How is this relevant to RPW?

[–]PhantomDream09 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not. Previously the topic was relevant (friend wasn't respecting the relationship/SO of the OP) - but now it's just petty weirdness.

[–]vintagegirlgame 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry that you think this is off topic. I guess I just felt like an update would still be relevant. However I do find advice for how to deal with one's old BP friends/relationships once one has swallowed the red pill. My old self would be much more tempted to keep a toxic relationship going but I'm learning more about being selective with who I give my energy to. I wouldn't bother you with pettiness, but this girl used to be my absolute best friend for many years, so it's hard for me to see the topic from an outside perspective and support from the community does help a lot. Cutting her out is a big decision, as we have a lot of mutual friends who would be affected by it, and I'm just looking for clarity so I can move forward with confidence.

[–]vintagegirlgame 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Sorry for the rambling update part. I guess writing out my experience is part of my need for closure. The part relevant to RPW is that I'm having to cut out a girl who was once my very best friend, but since swallowing the pill we have grown apart and I have realized what a negative influence she is. I've never had a falling out so making the finally decision to cut her out for good is a big one for me and the support of this community helps me a lot because I can't really talk about it to people without getting a bunch of BP advice. Before RPW I would have kept an ongoing toxic relationship up with her, to the detriment of my relationship with my SO. RPW is teaching me how to put me and my SO first, so I am sharing my experience so that maybe it will help someone else.

[–]-littlebee-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like for the benefit of your SO the source of drama should have been dropped long ago. I guarantee your SO does not see bickering with your friends and involving him as a positive attribute.

My advice going forward is to adopt a mindset of three paths: Do and succeed, Do and fail, or Do not do. There isn't a try in this mindset. Don't try and give up drama, just don't do it at all. Doing it and failing and doing it and succeeding are still making a choice to engage in the behavior.

Don't try and give up drama, just don't do it at all. Doing it and failing and doing it and succeeding are still making a choice to engage in the behavior.

This is absolute perfection. Well stated.

Thank you :) This is the mindset that helped me quit smoking years ago and I've applied it everywhere in my life.

[–]vintagegirlgame 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very yodaesqe...do or do not, there is no try!

Your original post was removed, so I don't know exactly what the fallout was about in the first place, and that would have heavily affected my response. (Btw, for future reference, if you want a link embedded in the text, put the words you want to be read in [] brackets and then the full link in () parentheses with no spaces in between. It'll look like this).

Do you want a relationship with her in the future? If so, absolutely send an email. Explain why you didn't speak with her, what the issue is, what she can do to fix it on her end. Set your terms firmly, and for the rest of your friendship (or at least quite awhile) keep her at arm's length.

If you don't want a relationship in the future, you could send the same email including a line about how you don't want to speak anymore, but keep in mind, she's going to argue with you, since she clearly would like to continue to be friends. You're going to want to get the last word in, so you're going to email back, and boom, a relationship of some sort is reestablished. That's why they say closure doesn't really exist, even if both people desire it--and in this case, only one of you does.

With that in mind, the best move would either be to send an explanatory email and block her immediately, letting her know that's what you're doing, or just cut this whole thing off and stop feeding into it--which is my actual advice. Cut her off, do not respond, do not email her, do not feed into the drama, and move on.

[–]vintagegirlgame 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thank you for your response. How does one take a screenshot of an entire reddit post?

I'm getting a lot of encouragement to just not respond which is probably good advice. I guess it's just hard since she was one of my dearest friends (before swallowing the pill), and I'm the kind of person who just wants people to understand each other and get along.

[–]freebumblebeeendorsed woman 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have friends (if you wanna call them that) that I hold at arm's length. I still have a drink or lunch and catch up, we exchange recipes and pinterest pins, and maybe we see each other in big groups at dinners or parties or something. But I don't trust them, I don't take their advice, and I don't let them have anything on me. Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me. Superficial friends, in contrast to my real friends. If your SO is comfortable with it (again, I missed the initial drama so this may be bad advice), feel free to be superficial friends with her.

As far as screenshots, I have a mac. If you do too, command+shift+4 will allow you take a screenshot you size yourself, and command+shift+3 takes a shot of the whole screen. If you don't have a mac, I'm afraid this advice is useless, but I recall it being way more complicated on PCs. Oh, if you have an iPhone it's lock button+home button at the same time, if reddit on your phone.

[–]katiemonster 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No offense, because I've certainly been guilty of this myself, but it sounds like you're really just dying to get the last word in with this girl, and it's not going to be as satisfying as you think it is.

If you really want to cut all contact...then cut all contact. You've already got a good "no talking" thing going, so why ruin it? The only reason to talk to this woman is if you want to reestablish some kind of relationship with her. And again, you're not the only one. I like to remind myself that if you don't want to talk to somebody...JUST DON'T TALK TO THEM. It's really that simple.

P.S. Your man agrees that a "closure" message is appropriate because he doesn't understand how women work in these situations. I guarantee he's sick of hearing about this situation and would like it to go away.

[–]vintagegirlgame 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I guess that desire to defend myself and get that last word can be tempting, but unsatisfying. I'm tempted to say something like "as a married woman, I'd think you'd understand that I can't tolerate disrespect to my relationship" but I know that would be unnecessarily provocative and not helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience, in hindsight it's easier to see that that last word is not the end.

[–]PhantomDream09 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a nonsense post and has no relevance to RPW. You're rambling, and come off as conceited with a stone to grind.

This community has supported you on this topic in the past, but enough is enough.

Something short?

"Thanks for your email. I wish you well for the future, but I think it's for the best that we go our separate ways."

Chances are, whatever you send, you'll get a reply back. You're not likely to be able to get the satisfying closure of a devastating monologue that sends her, chastened, out of your life. All you can do is cut yourself off with the least fuss for you.

I'd just like to highlight some of the things you said:

I just don’t see how she could possibly redeem herself.

It felt like I was practicing my “frame” with her… she was like a plate that I had decided didn’t offer me much anymore

my SO was very happy that we went and proud of me for resisting contact. I’m glad I listened to him

this is very likely how things could have gone had I let Liz engage me

I want to stick up for my SO, but I'm guessing she'll just think he's controlling/brainwashing me.

Let's just look at those for a second. It doesn't sound, from that, like she has an awful lot to offer you. Rather, it sounds as though she's an almost entirely negative influence on your life and your relationship with your SO. There doesn't seem to be any good reason to keep in any kind of contact with her and quite a few reasons why you'd be better off without her around.

You should always remember, too, that she's better at this kind of drama than you are:

I’ve never had a falling out with a friend before (where as she’s had them with sooo many people)

She'll drag you down to her level if you let her and beat you on her home turf. Every minute of contact you spend on her is wasted time, so keep it brief and use the minutes you've saved to share with your SO. As you put it yourself; hold frame.

[–]vintagegirlgame 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for your detailed reply. You're right that she's better at drama and I shouldn't engage her on her home turf, thanks for pointing this out. And you're right that I'm giving her too much of my time an energy dwelling on this. She's already sucking me into drama remotely.

It's just a big decision for me to close the lid on this. And we have a lot of mutual friends (one in particular who keeps trying to get us to make up) so I'll probably have to see her at the next wedding...

[–]notevenatthestart 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're welcome.

It's just a big decision for me to close the lid on this.

Sure, but then big decisions do sometimes have to be made. Talking can be very helpful but you can only prevaricate for so long; eventually it's decision time.

Presumably your SO will have input too.

I'll probably have to see her at the next wedding

There's no reason you can't be distantly polite to her in future when you're in the same room, just as you were this time round.

It comes down to this:

If you really want to avoid drama, it has to be a conscious decision you make to not engage with people like this in the same way you wouldn't engage with other unsavoury types of people. It means you'd also have to politely but firmly explain to your mutual friend that you've remedied the situation to your own satisfaction and have no interest in "making up" or in hearing her suggestions n the subject.

Imagine you had a friend who started talking to you about a particular type of tractor paint that she thinks is fascinating. I suspect in pretty short order you'd either apologetically tell her it doesn't interest you and to please talk about something else or you'd avoid her.

If you get bombarded by drama, you have to be similarly pro-active in shutting it down.

Careful, though. Drama can be addictive. It's can almost be hypnotic to be involved in it, just to see what's going to happen next and who's going to say what to who. And you've seen what it can do to people who get too into it; it can eat away at you and seep into other parts of your life. You come to need your daily drama fix like a smoker needs nicotine. I think for girls, as well, there's a cultural expectation that you'll be "into" drama; if you're not, it can seem as though you're boring and like you won't have anything to talk about.

Quitting drama can be as hard as quitting chocolate.

[–]vintagegirlgame 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thankfully I've never been into drama myself. Historically I always sought out male "friends" because "girls are too much drama," but since swallowing the pill I've realized my energy is better invested in female friends and have been trying to find cool, drama free women and build up those friendships. It's not easy but it's worth it.
