tl/dr: a fiercely independent female who longs for a more traditional lifestyle, but is afraid of “not contributing enough”.

i consider myself to be a successful young woman. i support myself financially, bought a home at 25 (now 26) and have an amazing relationship with a man that will soon be my husband. i had to wade through a lot of mud to get to where i’m at, but through my struggles & personal growth i’ve been able to manifest a life that i love.

i don’t really like to use the word “feminist” because of the negative associations it now has, i instead explain (if the topic is ever brought up) that i value all life on earth and believe that men & women are of equal worth and can compliment each other beautifully. but i was also taught to “never let a man take care of you” and to “be independent”.

now that i’ve found the partner of my dreams, i’m getting these urges to surrender to him - which is actually one of my biggest fears (and as an aries, it takes one hell of a man to bend me). i struggle with asking for help or even admitting to myself that i need it, and try to do everything on my own. i feel guilty for even thinking about wanting to stay home more so i can take care of the house and slip into a more traditional female role. i was raised to believe if you’re not working/making money you’re lazy & not contributing. the idea of having children has always repulsed me because i’m always so exhausted from work i can’t imagine taking care of another human on top of that! i dream about having the time to entertain thoughts of having a family and being able to do the things i love.

so i’m working full time, covering most of the bills (by my choice) and doing most of the housework (also my choice). he wants to provide for me, he wants me to reduce my hours to part time, but i can’t shake the feeling of being labeled as a lazy gold digger. have i proved that i’m capable, not lazy, not a mooch, independent already? if i take step back and let him take the lead am i less of a woman, or less of a “feminist”?

he’s giving me the space to decide if i want to keep working or have the opportunity to pursue my passions, and i’m currently choosing to slave away at my job. why? is it my ego? my pride? my fear of relinquishing control? my fear of dependence?

my parents have a more traditional marriage, but my dad resents her for “not doing enough” and my mom begged me to never let a man take care of me the way she has. i never want to feel undermined, or less than, but i also want to be taken care of without getting a “free ride” or being “lazy”.

is there anyone else experiencing this, or anyone who recently experienced this and was able to find peace with the decision they made?
