Opinions of Disney World here in MRP?

My college thesis was on Disney and gender roles. I've thought a LOT about the princess thing.

The Disney princesses are kind, generous, well mannered. They sing and clean with animals. The Disney princesses aren't stuck up snobs. They teach femininity (the classics, at least).

The message you have to watch out for is the message of entitlement... as in "I'm entitled to a prince charming/respect/money by birthright".

This is easily nullified by pointing out the other lessons. Cinderella was downtrodden for most her life before she was magically saved. The message there isn't "every woman is a princess" but instead "persevere through negativity long enough to see the positives"

I'm personally okay with Disney. Yeah. there are mixed messages, but as a parent you hold influence in what they take away from it all.

PS: How old are the girls?

Take them ziplining and snorkeling instead. Vitamin D makes people happy.

Take them to something/somewhere real. New York City, New Orleans & Antibellum Plantations, Yellow Stone, Badlands, Hawaii, etc.

Jesus Christ, just go and have a lot of fun.

Worry about their education about life skills another time. If they are of the age to enjoy disneyworld ? They are too young to start dealing with the real world in any case.

Enjoy the rides, enjoy the fun, enjoy being with your innocent daughters.

Later, when they are older, have a damn good chat about the princcess narrative, and how prince charming don't just ride up.... You have to earn him, become the girl he wants to wife.

You can have that chat about the same time as the Santa Claus and Tooth Fairy chats.... If they are too young for all 3 of these chats, take 'em to Disneyworld... They'll love it.

EDIT: Just FYI... Have Daughter... 4 years old. She loves the Disney shit. Got about a half-dozen-princess dresses in the dressing up box. My major concern is stopping my younger son trying them on. Going to have to buy him more pirate and soldier outfits :)

Just depends on how you approach it. You could enable the princess fantasy with the Bibbity bobbity boutique or delve in the sciences of EPCOT. There are SO many aspects of the WDW resorts that have zero to do with princesses.

Bass fishing on the seven seas lagoon is fucking awesome if you're willing to pay for it. You could spend a week there and never see a princess if you really wanted to. Get a tent and just camp at Fort Wilderness.

Edit to add: Fishing at Port Orleans resort is some of the most challenging fishing. They make you use barbless hooks, the water is crystal clear, and those fish have all been caught dozens of times. If they even sense a hook, they wont bite. You'll quickly innovate some worm hooking strategies you can use the next time you're fishing at home.

I love Disneyworld even more than my boys.

The problem with Disney isn't the Princess thing. Every girl dreams of being a Princess. The problem with Disney is the more recent movies that portray the feminine imperative, with yougogiiiiiirrrrl Mulon warriors and the newest characters like Anna who don't need no stinkin man cuz they are all pathetic Betas anyway.

Frankly, what matters isn't what TRP thinks, but how the activity fits YOUR vision. If you think it does, and you and your kids will have fun, go for it.

Why on earth would you go more than once. It costs a fortune and the world has so many other cool and educational places to explore with kids than to give your hard earned dollars to one of Americas biggest corporate giants.

I hated it and the fact that you have to check your brain at the door, pay money for water everywhere and everyone and everything is fake. Get passports and go to Costa Rica or Panama or Canada or St. Martin, or Iceland or Europe - anywhere. Want to stay States side? Tons of places to go (that's why few Americans travel - why would they when there's so much to do and see right in USA).

As others have said: go do something real not something in a reservation set up by corporate puppet handlers.

Sounds like a fun vacation.

However, if you've been several times already, I would personally mix it up and try something else.

I have no problem with the princesses thing. It's just as unrealistic as Jedis, and kids are able to tell the difference between fantasy and real life. But it's really fun to be in a fantasy world for a while.

Been there a number of times when my kids were different ages. One vacation when they were still single digit ages we did a few days there and then went to Captiva Island, on the Gulf side. There are a ton of activities there including a wildlife refuge area with salt and fresh water on different sides. Six months later they didn't remeber much about Disney but we're still talking about the alligators we saw, the pelicans at the pier and the awesome kids club at South Seas resort. YMMV
