My wife has recently expressed interest in getting a job. I think this might help her to be more responsible, and it would give her something productive to do instead of wasting time on the internet. We don't need the money, but it would be nice to be able to save more so that I could retire earlier. Should I encourage her to get a job?

My wife is a stay at home mom and home schools our two children. She can be a good wife and mother when she wants to be, but she often chooses to waste time on facebook and netflix instead of spending time with the kids or keeping the house clean. Our house isn't a total mess, but I often come home to a sink full of dirty dishes, it will be approaching 6:00, and she'll be on facebook wasting time instead of making dinner. When I leave for work in the morning everyone else is usually still asleep, and it's common that I'll have to go find socks and underwear from the dryer because she hasn't folded the laundry.

We agreed when we got married that she would stay home and take care of the kids and that I would work. I didn't clearly set my expectations back then though and apparently we have different ideas about what being a stay a home mom requires. I'm sure I don't give her enough credit for what she has to deal with being home with the kids all day, but I often feel like she doesn't take her job as a mom as seriously as I do mine, and hers is the one that really matters. I think part of the problem is that she's never had a full time job (outside of being a stay at home mom), and she never got used to working hard. I'm hoping that if she gets a job it will help teach her a stronger work ethic, and help with her facebook addiction since she won't have so much free time on her hands.

Since I work during the day, and we both agree we want to keep our children home schooled, my wife would have to work swing shift. That would mean we would only see each other for half an hour on week days, which is the only down side I can see.

So is this a good idea? Should we try it for a few months and see how it goes?
