This is an interesting article concerning the MeToo campaign which is massive right now.

I for one am very glad these high profile abusers and creeps are getting called out, however I do feel like it can easily lead to an atmosphere where it is not okay to be a man. I also feel like many women are abusing the term MeToo. Having a man be a jerk or even unwantedly kind to you isn't the same as having a man sexually abuse you.

Like the article states, the issue should be whether or not women can safely say no. Too often this isn't the case, and that is what must change. I don't think being mad rather than flattered if someone calls you beautiful is the answer though. These are some crazy times, ya'll!

Were people actually using metoo to complain about being complimented?

I'm really torn on this one.

On one hand I do feel like it's out of control and there is a culture of victimhood around male-female interactions these days. Most men I come across are great, and I feel like being smart and aware can protect us from 99% of the not-so-great ones.

On the other hand I've had plenty of really shitty behaviour out of men in the workplace (implying I would get a promotion if I wore tighter clothes, groping at work functions, etc) and I don't think that there's anything wrong with calling that out and shaming men who can't keep their hands to themselves in a professional setting. I don't understand why women are only now calling out behaviour from years and years ago, but I think that women nowadays should be able to go to work without being harassed.

Add public transportation to that list! Grabbing my ponytail and grabbing my ass (in front of my fiancé, who I then had to talk out of following the guy) is not a compliment. In my city, I could be clothes head to toe in baggy clothing and if I'm a woman alone I get catcalled, and I really don't think those should count as compliments when the intent is clearly to harass. Someone hitting on me at a bar or a social event I understand, even if I don't like it, but the workplace, the commute, the laundromat, etc is too much.

Yes I think every rational person could agree those behaviors are clearly out of line. I think if the "hitting on" is respectful and not pushy and if it occurs when neither party is working or at their place of employment then its not such a bad thing. I have been hit on walking down the street, at the supermarket, on the bus and always felt safe and confident in kindly saying not interested. I actually dated a man for many many months who chatted me up outside my yoga studio in my old city. I have also been groped at work (so many times when serving), hit on at work, and aggressively hit on on the street. All these things made me super uncomfortable. I think that there is a right and a wrong way to go about approaching people and that goes for every sort of social situation.

I am French, and I agree. Of course, Americans believe that all western cultures are/should be the same and cannot see why we do not agree with the unnecessary harassment of innocent and non-offending men by virtue of them being male alone. American women are too caught up in being victims while simultaneously being 'strong and independent women' and I can't seem to understand the logic anymore.

I love Margaret Atwood's take on metoo here. Earned her a lot of backlash, but I can't fault a thing she says.

Yes! Great article, although I was not familiar with the case she is talking about before now. I feel like the extremists on both sides are really making a mess of things, as per usual. The feminist message (which I do think holds merit) is being lost in what appears to be matriarch rule which as Atwood says is just the flip of the coin but still the same thing.

Another article questioning how this movement may be getting out of control: https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/01/the-humiliation-of-aziz-ansari/550541/

MeToo focuses on the wrong sort of men. Why is there no uprising for those that got molested, raped and coerced by those rapefugees?

Curious as to where you are from? Germany? I am from the US (third generation German) and love immigrants <3 . If my country were being torn apart by war I would try my best to get my kids out, for sure.
