Don't look at the negatives of the situation. The best thing about martial arts is literally anyone can humble you. You've only been training for two months as well. This kid has probably been training his entire life.

Dude, the whole point of sparring is to remove this fucking ego of yours that can't take getting your ass beat by someone more experienced in that specific sport.

Consider yourself lucky that you're learning this lesson after a relatively safe sparring session and not after getting your wasted ass humiliated by a malevolent bouncer in front of your friends and girl after a night-out.

My direct advice for you is to analyze your sparring sessions and where specifically you felt weak in (was it distance management? He just keeps running in and closing distance on you with jabs? Was it cuz your guard is just rubbish, needs to be tighter? Are you being too stationary? Are you throwing your combos without guarding your chin? Are you circling the right way? Are you being too obvious with your strikes, not setting up or feinting? Are you intimidated by his size or length, causing you to be apprehensive of throwing?).

After analyzing your mistakes, enter the next sparring sessions with specific things you want to improve on in the forefront of your mind and receive the beating you need to receive to learn and improve on those things.

The only thing you can do is keep doing. Accept that he's better, and see what you can learn from him.

There's a psychological aspect to fighting as well. You may have an edge there in that you could try to get inside his head. Mess with him a bit.

That said, there are probably a lot of people your age that could kick your ass too. It's good to have humbling experiences. Keeps your life in perspective.

Happened to me in BJJ. Met a 23 yo muslim white belt (Im 33) and he is stronger than EVERYONE. Practically wiped the floor with my instructor, a black belt. So I decided to train with him to figure out whats his secret.

Turns out he's a black belt in Judo. So I felt better, but still shitty. Then he went all pro-Isis and I had to stop training with him.

He eventually told my instructor to go fuck himself and left for another gym, vowing to come back and challenge him.

Scares the shit out of me that there's an army of super strong muslim pro-Isis dudes out there. So I fuckin train my ass off in case he comes back with that challenge.

Edit: Funny thing is, I SWEAR he swings the other way, was very feminine (brought Prada or Gucci bags to class, whichever one has that distinct brown and yellow-ish random design bag you see everywhere.)

I have been training BJJ for 5 years and sometimes a newbie catches me. When i first started training everyone kicked my ass every day. I mean i would get tapped like 2-4 times each roll with 3-4 rolls per session... You have only been training for 2 months man everyone is going to kick your ass.

Let the gym be the place where you leave your ego at the door. You are learning with each other and not fighting for dominance.

My friend is like two or three years younger than me. Even though I have easily 150lbs on him, he's picked me up/beaten me in fights because he has been trained. I wasn't bummed out in those instances; that's life.

This is a 110% normal. Doing mma,boxing,muay thai,wrestling and etc is a journey of being humbled. First when you start everyone bests your ass. This phase defines who you are. Are you gonna be a quitter or a person who accepts failure to improve and picks themselves backup. Overtime no matter how much ass you start to kick someone will come and humble you back down(cough cough my coach). Even the 17old fighter you sparred has gone through the same humbling as you and will be constantly humbled also.

Yeah, so there are guys stronger and with better trained reflexes than you. Not sure why this surprises you. They've been lifting and training for longer. Use him to motivate you to lift heavier and spar more.

I quit training mixed martial arts in ninth grade (I was 5’0 and weighed around 100 pounds) when a new kid joined my bjj class that I’d been attending for a couple years. He was way stronger than any of my usual sparring partners (clearly lifted and played sports) and he wiped my ass every time. I was so discouraged that I quit and I’ve regretted it ever since. Don’t be like me. I was a bitch because I only sparred with people at my skill level and I got comfortable so when a decent challenge appeared I ran. Comfort breeds weakness.

This happens to everyone who takes up boxing or MMA or something similar. You train for a while, build some confidence, think you're ready to spar, get in the ring, adrenaline kicks in, you get tired faster than you ever though you would, and get humbled. It's an important learning experience. You'll eventually get more relaxed when sparring and learn to adapt your style to different opponents.

Not saying this applies to you, but for some, getting humbled in sparring teaches why getting in fights outside the ring is foolish. That guy in the bar you think you can beat up and humiliate might be a pro boxer.

Lol martial arts will fuck your ego and make you more humble. In jiu jitsu I got may ass kicked by a 50 year old and I am 17 and I have wrestled for 2 years as well as done jiu jitsu for about a year and he was only a blue belt. Don't sweat it dude you will get better and more technical though.

Did you consider yourself good before this?

i had a similar situation but roles reversed. I was boxing and I sparred with an older man. I was 18, 150 lbs (but I worked out) and he was about 32ish, 230 and just big. He definitely want cut but he wasn’t pure fat either. The guy had some muscle it was just covered.

Anyway he was my sparring partner. We boxed, traded blows. He hit pretty good. But I was knocking the shit out of him. After wards I was talking with my buddy and he came up to me and said- “man, you hit hard as fuck!” He seemed kinda mad but not THAT mad. He did shake my hand though.

I didn’t think any less of him. In fact, he wasn’t a bad fighter at all. I don’t even remember his face. I’m telling you that so that you’re not embarrassed. I’m 28 now and I’m sure there are 17 year olds that could whoop my ass. Although probably not many bc I’m pretty cut now. Haha just playin. But it’s all good brother keep ya head up.

Dude this kid is obviously much stronger and more experienced in the martial art there's nothing to be ashamed of. Just get stronger and work on your skills.

And sparring is for learning. If you're in sparring getting your ass whopped then there's no point to it. Fight someone on your level.
