How do you ladies deal with other women’s behavior in the workplace??
I have a co-worker who seems to constantly keep tabs on my work, my comings and goings. While we are both working, she tends to constantly question me, make comments about every single mistake or at every mispronouncing of a word, she seems to feel the need to correct EVERY statement that is said. I’ll give some examples...
One time I complemented a co-worker on her sneakers and I said “those are some cute Nike’s!” I say it so it rhymes with “Mike”, and apparently she says it so it rhymes with “Mikey”. And she just throws her head back in laughter, she’s like “ITS NIKE-EEE!!!!”. She then goes on for several minutes “omg she said NIKE!!!LOL” (I say it like that because thats how they say it in my native language, it just came out subconsciously.)
Another example....You’ll be walking toward the wrong room, she shouts “WHERE ARE YOU GOING!? Its this way!” This is all sort of said in a “joke-y” manner. The other day someone asked me for the time, (my watch battery died) so I gave them the wrong time. She was across the room. And she yells “WHAT?? Its NOT 5!! Its almost 6!!!”.
One of my other coworkers asked a question to the wind like “how do you access this program on the computer?” And this co-worker is like “MOVE, MOVE, MOVE I’ll do it” and me and my other co-worker just looked at each other like??? Whats her deal. She came across the room to “help”. She could have just said “its on the desktop”.
The other day, a co-worker picked up a purple rubber ring, thinking it was a toy and put it on the counter. (We have strange sensory toys, it made sense).
This co-worker is like: “WHY IS THE DOORSTOP ON THE COUNTER??!!”
Other CW: oh I though it was a toy! Lol
Co-worker: “WELL I USE IT IN THE UTILITY ROOM, ITS A DOORSTOP SOOOO...
Other CW: well that works then! We aren’t supposed to have door stops anyways.. its a state violation if those doors are propped open ect...we have controlled substances in the fridge ect....
Co-worker: WELL ITS THERE SOOO...and I only use it when i’m near the room so I don’t have to unlock the door 8X...ect (basically justifying herself to death) goes on for 5 minutes.
Other CW: i was just saying....
I have to work just with her alone 4 days out of my week and it gets quite annoying.
Some of my responses to her have been like “actually we are fine CW, thanks” said sternly when she tries to insert herself. I’ve also said things like “can you mind your business” in a jokey tone. She seemed to back off when I get assertive and stern with her.
I really don’t want to play this game with her. Its like she is trying to establish a hierarchy. And is constantly pushing me to see how much she can get away with saying and doing to me.
We are close in age, I am 26 and she is 21, sometimes at work she gets confused for being older than me. I work with an older age population so I have allot women try and set me up with their son’s or grandson’s. I think she doesn’t like this. I also get allot of attention because I am a minority where I live. Things like speaking a second language and my curly hair are big conversation starters. I’m assuming she is salty about this as well.
I only mention this because this has been something she made a snarky comments about.
We had a piano player come and play all the songs from Sound Of Music, and when I mentioned I have never seen that play/film she goes “gosh you’re such a stupid my race!!!”. I actually reporter her for that one.
Anyways...whats the best RPW way to have this girl chill out. Do i really have to try and pass her “shit tests” for lack of a better term??? Is this something women do to other women? I vacillate from wanting to establish my place and wanting to ignore her. Sometimes I’m comfortable with ignoring her because at the end of the day I go home to my wonderful partner and my super sweet apartment we just got (!!!!!!!) I’m living a very happy RP life, so its sometimes easy to just be like “sucks to be you co-worker”.
what is your opinion on this situation?
