For the most part, I think the article is pretty reasonable and rational. If it is indeed true that women only get one chance while men get multiple opportunities, then I would have to agree that it is an actual legitimate case for gender discrimination.

However, I do think that if she was truly ambitious, she would have pushed herself to meet the male standards, despite it not being a requirement. The standards set for women only serve as a minimum baseline and by no means restrict women from pushing themselves far beyond that. Her thinking that lower female standards was a major contributor to her failure is simple lack of accountability on her part.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dude, the male minimum standards are so unacceptable that if you actually got the minimum you would smoked for your entire enlistment, or at least until you squared yourself away. The minimum is so unacceptable, I honestly don't even remember what it was. It was unheard of. If you were doing 10 pullups, you were a non-hacking shitbird that deserved to be hazed until you got your shit together. If someone did 3 or 5 or whatever the minimum is, jesus fuck, you better be 40 or dead.

[–]icanteventhecat 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was about to write that she collapsed due to fatigue. However, you are right. How come she didn't say "I'm going to meet the men's standard even though I am not required to."?

If it is indeed true that women only get one chance

Well, that will help a lot to avoid tons of precious womyn from armed forces.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I can't say I found anything she said particularly disagreeable, lowering fitness standards for women then expecting the same performance as men is flawed. Keep equal standards and you'll have fewer, but better, women.

She makes good points as well about adding more combat-oriented fitness training, which is true for both men and women and is something the army is (or at least had been) experimenting with.

[–]TooMuchToDoo 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think what OP is looking at is how the female marine didn't blame herself for why she failed the Basic Endurance Course at IOC. She never said "because I wasn't physically strong enough." She mentioned how there may not have been enough training time between BOC and IOC, and that female marines are held to a lower standard physical fitness standard in the fleet, but she never pinned the blame on herself.

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. Accountability. It's just nowhere to be seen.

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If they didn't lower standards at basic training for women, there would be no women in the military. They can't do pushups or pull ups.

She is blaming basic training for setting the bar too low. That is what a woman would do, rather than take responsibility for her failures. We can't have a military made up of hamsters who blame their training for all of their failures.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

They can't do pushups or pull ups.

I missed the part where she tells her readers her current max pull up reps. Is it non-zero number? Is closer to the male or female perfect score for basic?

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She claims she can do 16 pull ups, but I honestly think that's bullshit given the fact that she couldn't last one day. Even if she can, she is an aberration. The vast majority of women can't, and if they didn't get the flexed arm hang exemption, almost no women would be in the military, but it's cool of so many good guys who want to stick up for the vag around here.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not "sticking up for her". No need to get passive aggressive and resort to shaming when people point out flaws in your analysis.

I just advocate for reading comprehension, which appears to be absent when someone posts an article and states that women can't do pull-ups despite what is actually written in said article.

She is saying that if only women had been trained the same way as men from the beginning at basic training, they would be able to meet the more difficult standards of the officers course.

But those training standards are minimums, and some women could choose to exceed them if they worked at it. She is rationalizing why she failed, and how it is not her fault, but the training system's fault.

She is blaming the Marine Corps for her, and other women's, inability to perform the required fitness tests, rather than accept that women simply aren't physically capable of passing.

[–]Clauderoughly 21 points22 points23 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She is saying that if only women had been trained the same way as men from the beginning at basic training, they would be able to meet the more difficult standards of the officers course.

Except when they tried that orginally almost all the women failed because they couldn't do it.

So they lowered the standard for women.

All this did was waste more resources because no matter what the women will wash out due to physical issues sooner or later. All they did when they lowered the standards, was kick the can down the road.

They should be filtering at the beginning, and the same standards for all those who want to serve.

If you can't do it (man or woman) Sorry but maybe the armed forces are not for you..

[–]Regnuvium 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The endgoal for officers and enlisted is not infantry. There are many MOS, all very important in each branch. The entrance requirements into the military alone aren't meant to be as a hard as infantry, as most people do not go into an infantry MOS. It's basic training/officer training, then you ship to your MOS school, with different requirements depending on the school. For those who choose infantry, that is what they will be further evaluated on. The reason they make general entrance requirements easier for women, is because if they made them the same as men(which they've experimented with before), then not nearly as many women would make it into the military, and a lot of the non infantry MOS would need more spots.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You are missing the point.

How can you earnestly try to increase the number of women in combat without ruining the selection process?

If you view the problem primarily as women not being able to meet the physical challenges of the officer's test, but realize that most advocates have committed to a "race to the bottom" for minimum standards as a solution, framing the problem merely as a lack of effort to improve performance will go over as well as Maria Kang's facebook posts.

Motivating people to improve isn't always as simple as pointing out the obvious flaw and placing the blame on the shoulders of those who didn't accomplish the goal. A group that routinely uses perceived victimization as emotional motivation will respond better to a call to self-improvement by framing the limitation as a lack of opportunity to train at the required level.

You're right that they should have focused on strenuous physical training prior to enlisting, but that's not pertinent to what she's trying to accomplish by writing this article.

EDIT: Down-voter, go read up on powertalk instead of wasting time on this post.

rather than accept that women simply aren't physically capable of passing.

But some women have passed. It's mentioned in the article. Just not the 14 she was amongst.

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No women have passed the marine officers training. Women have passed the army version. All 14 women who attempted the marine officers course have failed. 13 of them failed after the first day.

This girl was 5' 3" by the way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My failed attempt at Quantico, and the fact that no woman has yet made it through the Infantry Officer Course, shouldn’t be interpreted as evidence that women can’t handle combat environments. To date, 13 female Marines have passed the two-month enlisted infantry training course at Camp Geiger in North Carolina. While that course is significantly less demanding than the one at Quantico, it is still grueling — participants must lug 85-pound packs on 12-mile treks through the woods — and it establishes the standard for enlisted warfighters.

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Enlisted is different than officer.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

? I'm not disagreeing with that.

The guy above me thought other women had passed the officer's test. He was thinking of the the enlisted infantry course, which obviously is different.

EDIT: a word

[–]cascadecombo -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

is significantly less demanding

she quite clearly states that.

[–]unmitigatedbadassery -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But those training standards are minimums, and some women could choose to exceed them if they worked at it. She is rationalizing why she failed, and how it is not her fault, but the training system's fault.

I don't completely agree with that statement. You are trained in school that a certain amount of effort will net you a certain grade. If we assume a person has gotten the top grade any more effort just goes to waste. So if there is only one requirement, and you reach that then you are trained to assume any more effort is wasted and you stop there. Doesn't matter if you call it minimum requirement if you don't have any higher requirements to shoot for.

What I think they could do is keep the minimum requirement, but inform them that if they intend to become an officer they will need to go for "these higher requirements".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's why I'm not in the NFL, I train to lower physical standards.

[–]BroseppeVerdi 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Former Marine, here. Since the author of this article is a boot who has some misconceptions about how the Marine Corps works (it's okay, we all start out as boots), I just wanted to clear up one minor detail:

I was excited to have a shot at the Marines’ premier training course.

Not even close. Although the IOC is obviously very challenging and physically demanding, there are many schools within the Corps that are both harder to get into and have a much higher attrition rate, such as MARSOC, Scout Sniper school, and SERE school, just to name a few. At least one of these is an all-service school, and I'm sure BUD/S probably belongs on this list as well, though I don't know enough about it to comment.

That having been said, I actually agree with her point that we're not doing female Marines any favors by holding them to lower standards. Many of you are, no doubt, familiar with the recent survey that showed that less than 8% of army women opposed opening combat arms occ fields to women. As it stands, women in the military get the same pay for essentially doing less work... this is a pretty cushy status quo, why would they want to change it?

I think this article is objective and well reasoned and I more or less agree with her with the "single standard", although I know a lot of women who wouldn't because their lowered standards make it easier for them to get promoted faster (PFT scores factor into promotions, and boards/cutting scores don't make gender distinctions). In spite of this, I too think she underestimates the physical differences in gender, and I predict that when she goes back for a second try, she'll probably fail again. Someday, I'm sure a female will pass the course, but I doubt it will be her.

TL;DR: While there has been much hamstering on this issue in the past, there is none to be found here here. Swing and a miss, OP.

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of the guys you knew who offered excuses for why they failed IOC or any difficult school, how many blamed basic training fitness standards for their lack of success?

[–]circlhat 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She is asking to be able to retake the test again, just like men are able to take the test again

But I believe that I could pass, and that other women could pass, if the standards for men and women were equal from the beginning of their time with the Marines, if endurance and strength training started earlier than the current practice for people interested in going into the infantry, and if women were allowed a second try, as men are.

She is saying what men have been saying all alone, women should be forced to do real push ups and pull-ups.

The training for women is so easy by the time they get to the marine test they haven't develop their bodies, and they only get one shot, she is arguing if she had of been trained like men since day one she would of had a actual shot.

This is sexism against women, not men, a women should be allowed to retry just as men are allowed to retry.

[–]charlesbukowksi 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women would be better served if they weren't coddled by society. Unfortunately those who advocate "equality" often aim to increase rather than diminish kid-gloving, going so far as to suggest men should be treated the same way. This is the opposite of what is needed.

[–]Blood_Vaults 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

IOC is one of the hardest schools the DOD offers. It's no surprise.

The Combat Endurance test is the killer when it comes to female officers. One of my former Platoon Commanders devised a toned down version of the test for my platoon during one week where we had nothing going on. When all was said and done he estimated only 4, maybe 5 of us would have passed if we were going through the legit course, out of a platoon of 30 seasoned enlisted Infantry Marines. The test will surely bring you to the threshold when it comes to physical endurance, MOS knowledge, the ability to think and perform under pressure, and mental toughness. I've been to some pretty tough schools in the USMC and IOC is supposed to be up there with BRC (Basic Reconnaissance Course) and all the high speed MARSOC shit when it comes to difficulty.

[–]alphamale31 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you're a woman and serious about joining the military you should be working out years before in preparation.

Because face it, you do have to work harder then a man to meet the requirements, sucks but its true. There not going to change the standards.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They might as well give women a second chance if they give men them.

But i love how women so often quickly glaze over men's physical superiority as "more upper body strength" Yeah that and more lower body strength, athleticism, explosiveness, speed, endurance, size, toughness, and so on.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is actually very well written. She's not trying to say that they should lower standards but build women up from the beginning to meet those standards. To express ones concerns, disappointments, and valid observations isn't hamstering.

[–]1iluminatiNYC 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

First of all, this is interesting because I know a former (male) military policeman who is 5'3" and around the same weight as an in-shape female. Of course, he won his weight class 4 years running as a high schooler wrestler and is pound-for-pound the strongest person I've ever met. I want to run this by him and get his thoughts.

That said, I think the woman interviewed kept it real. There are certain combat jobs that women have been able to hack, but Marine officer training isn't among them. She then suggests a few ideas that may or may not help. Not wrong. Not necessarily right. Just honest. She stepped up, took the L and is moving on with her life. Nothing wrong with that.

[–]Manuel_S -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

"Female lieutenants aren’t as prepared as male lieutenants for the Infantry Officer Course’s tests of strength and endurance because they’ve been encouraged to train to lesser standards."

This is perfectly reasonable. Woman is not hamstering. Though she IS underestimating the effects of gender differences.

Making the experience and still seeing no women get through - that would be very valuable for our society.

[–]CharlesODriscoll[S] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Who encourages them to train to lesser standards?!! Who is this person? Why does she get a pass on blaming everyone else but herself for her failures? Why do regular joes training for a marathon train to higher standards than her? Because they are men who don't sit on a tampon raft of complaints.

It's so damn convenient to get to say, "my body physically shut down. My mind wanted to keep going. But by body stopped. The reason that happened is because I didn't get to train with the men 5 years ago in basic training."

You can't call her bluff because what's done is done. It's all in the past, but she sure as hell gets to hamster the accountability for her failures away.

[–]cascadecombo 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's so damn convenient to get to say, "my body physically shut down.

Not being in her shoes I can't say she's being honest or not, but have you ever pushed your body to the point where you can do no more? There were what 25 other people who failed, 21 of which were male. Who for all we know had something similar happen to them. And being held to lesser standards encourages doing less to achieve what they want. Yeah she should have trained more, doesn't she admit that as well.

[–]Cgn38 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you body physically shuts down you don't head back to barracks for a fucking pizza. You wake up in barracks or hospital.

She gave up and blamed it on her body then headed for a pizza break. The Comment about playing hockey with guys is all you need. Shes got issues with competitiveness and probably sees herself as a man, reality be damned. No 5 foot three woman it going to be worth a shit in hockey they just don't have any fucking strength compared to a man. Shes a angry dyke, just as good in every way as a man but mysteriously not able to do her shit like one, the military is full of them. Always some fucking excuse that its not her fault she did not pull her weight. They end up with cush jobs while some dude does double duty for them.

[–]cooltrip -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They'll probably use the same hamstering techniques they use for Science Nobels or Olympics: Science Nobels and Olympics are sexist.
