There's a key lesson here that I think is easy to miss.

We (smart men) spend a lot of time in our youths congratulating ourselves on our intelligence. Having been ostracized our entire lives for it, we rationalize that "other people are just too dumb to understand me."

Eventually, we build an entire identity around that intelligence. We value it more than anything else. We try and find ways to appear smarter than we actually are. We avoid taking risks that might make us look stupid. And we feel a tinge of gratification when someone fails and looks dumb nearby - because we appear smarter by comparison.

And it's fucking poisonous.

Remember how the popular dumb guys were all really good with women? That's because they had more social savy, more sensitivity to social cues, and less of an investment in their own egos and images of themselves. And as a result, they were more confident, more attractive, and better able to command respect among their peers.

Ever notice how the nerds ended up getting jobs which are basically positions of subservience? Even if they're well-paid, they're never jobs which people raise eyebrows at. They're not job titles which make pussies tingle.

But people with good social skills? They become the leaders, investers, and architects of civilization.

Social skills are a greater predictor of success and prestige than intelligence, because civilization is a social contest. And beyond a certain threshold, intelligence is actually counter-productive, because smart people have a harder time sympathizing and cooperating with people of lower "intelligence".

In the end, what is intelligence really? Intelligence, in my opinion, is synonymous with the word "magic". Being a computer scientist, I've noticed that whenever we get machines to do something that humans have done, we just call it an algorithm. But as we develop increasingly sophisticated algorithms that let machines do more complicated tasks, we always conveniently push the boundary of intelligence just a little father away - so that we can imagine ourselves to be unique creatures, rather than machines made of blood, and bone, and meat, and dust. But one of these days, machines will be able to do almost everything, and intelligence will have no where else to hide - except in the realm of the social and the arbitrary.

When a woman says she wants a guy with social skills, it's one of the few times she's speaking both truthfully and factually.

Game is your solution. The Red Pill is your guide. Shed your ego, and harness your intelligence to win the social game.

The problem is that nerdy betas don't value intelligence for its own sake either. They valued it because it got them praise from adults; then they valued it because they thought they thought it would make women attracted to them.

[–]anra[S] 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

a good point, but you misspoke.

We (smart men) spend a lot of time in our youths congratulating ourselves on our intelligence.

we spend a lot of time in our youth being congratulated by adults.

[–]TRP VanguardHumanSockPuppet 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

We do get told that by adults, yes. But I'm inclined to believe that we readily (even eagerly) accept their prediction because we want to believe that there is a reason we're being ostracized by our peers. The human mind is like that - it searches for reasons, and hungrily consumes any that fit its preconceptions.

I'd rather place the blame on the individual and encourage an attitude of agency, than look for an external cause and habituate a pattern of blaming.

[–]anra[S] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

of course we want to believe it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that people mean entirely different things under "social skills". For example "leadership skills" usually means nothing more complicated that radiating that kind of silent confidence that makes people trust your judgement and want to comply.

On the other hand I think what this girl might have meant is more like having some very very sensitive empathy, picking up the sligthest clue that the other person might not be in the perfect mood or was a tad bit disturbed by something you said, and giving a fuck about this all, which is to some extent beta. Ultimately this sense of social skills is the opposite end of leadership, it is the perfect servant who does not even need orders but has so much sensitivity and empathy that he can figure out the other persons slightest need or mood or wish and comply.

So what, ultimately are social skills?

There are some others.

One common social skills is being able to chat about things that do not interest you with people that do not interest you, feigning interest in both. No thanks. And if you say no to this, like I do, you automatically become a curmudgeon like I am who rejects invitations to lunch because 99% of people 99% of the time just talk about silly superficial shit.

Exactly. No sweetheart, I just felt my way into learning three instruments. It had nothing to do with spending hours learning music theory, learning rules and practice.

Oh, but math and science are hard and there's only one answer and I don't really understand it therefore it must be boring.

[–]soapjackal -4 points-3 points-2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I know this girl who was a decent musician who changed in major in college from music because music theory was too hard.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What do you switch to if music theory is too hard? Women's Studies?

[–]r_rships_account 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What do you switch to if music theory is too hard?

You've obviously never studied music theory at college level.

Business :D haha

[–]soapjackal -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And I can see how people could misinterpret my comment, I was in line with what you were saying. Music theory is incredibly useful, I was dissappointed when she switched majors.

I guess the anti-white knight reflex of theirs can get confused.

I met this girl who proudly told me she was student president for "Support Malawi" for two yeats at that point. I found her pretty interesting because she seemed cute and smart. So then she mentions how she met someone from Malawi and how she wanted to go there in the summer. I asked how long it would take to fly there (from the UK). She said "Ah shouldn't be long, few hours, it's just the north of Africa".

I respond "Uhh...I don't think so". I'm no expert on all the countries in Africa but I know most of he countries in the north, and Malawi is not anywhere near the north. So the more I asked about that the more it came clear to us that she was full of shit and only trying to appear cultured and refined. Too bad she reeked of BS.

[–]DasEwigeLicht 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For the curious: It's not in the north.

[–]red_tux 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's about a 10-12 hour direct flight form London.... If one exists. (I've flown to Uganda from Rotterdam and that's about 8 hours)

The classic thing is when a woman says she loves V for Vendetta because it's this epic struggle of the anarchist underdog against the dystopian fascist government, V is very cultured, real deep etc, then for extra points she also loves the Count of Monte Cristo which is mentioned as the character V's favourite film in V for Vendetta.

Goddamn, that movie was a travesty.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Dude, the movie was great. I don't know what else to say—the multiplying villanies of nature do prey upon me.

[–]SinfulPhilanthropist3 points 13 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

The movie captured the basic plot arch with hardly any of the central themes. You know, the parts that makes you think. And then it cut out so much awesome. I just can't even. Can't even sentence. Words make sad. Drain literacy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I read the comic a while back but I don't remember any specific thematic differences. Care to clue me in?

[–]SinfulPhilanthropist1 points 13 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't know about a comic, but it's a book. Alexandre Dumas wrote it. The same guy that wrote the three musketeers if I'm not batshit crazy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ooooooooooooooooooooooo. Dude I was talking about V for Vendetta. The Macbeth quote of multiplying villanies is what V first says (at least in the comic, though probably in the movie too) so that was an obscure clue.

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books, and Dumas is indeed the d'Artagnan musketeer guy. Though you may still be batshit crazy, you never know.

You know how a modern English class looks like. Take some fairly simple novel. Discuss how you feel about it, compare perspectives, the teacher will add a few perspectives worthy of consideration, will never say aloud that a perspective is wrong (although try to tell a perspective that is not fully politically correct and the teacher will usually signal disapproval via body language, throat cleaning, "well, that was interesting... now let's blablah"), and so on.

If this was Dungeons and Dragons, i'd tell her she confused Intelligence with Charisma and therefore confused a Wizard with a Bard. Although, considering Bards are usually lying bastards, I can see how you'd mix the two classes up!

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This reminds of this girl I hung out with for a few weeks on a backpacking trip. I humored her a bit on some interpersonal relationship BS she wanted to talk about. Basically I just listened and went "uh-huh" with a tid-bit of insight here and there. Then she said "it is so nice to be able to talk to a guy who can have intelligent conversations." I was dumbfounded. The conversations we were having were so far away from what an intelligent conversation actually is, that I couldn't believe she had uttered those words. I don't think girls understand what an actual intelligent conversation entails.

[–]Moxiecontin 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

To be fair, the "listening and injecting a relevant comment" strategy is something I often use to convince men that we're having an intelligent conversation. It works really well on people who are pretty smug, and like to hear themselves talk. All they're really hearing are their own thoughts, and gosh, they are just the smartest people ever, aren't they?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When it comes to politics, philosphy, science, economics, or any number of subjects which a true intelligent conversation can be had, most women know nothing about it and wouldn't be able to express any sort of opinion on it. Not all guys do either, but if I am going to have an intelligent conversation then 9 times out of 10 it is only possible with men. Girls love talking about interpersonal relationships far more, and in my opinion that isn't intelligent it is just gossipy crap.

Being able to discuss ideas of English and art

Urghhh

I study a STEM subject and things like the hard sciences and mathematics massively draw from creative thought and at the same time art and literature require hugely rigorous thought. So many women just want to look cultured and sophisticated, to other people. I mean would that girl really be able to discuss art or literature with someone who had devoted a lot of time to studying those fields?

I'm aware I've missed the main point of the thread which is a girl rationalising her attraction to men with game by calling this intelligence.

[–]incraved 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I always laughed when I heard a woman saying "I like smart guys". Of course, you do ! Except smart in your book means socially smart and not necessarily intelligent.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There are different types of intelligence, the type she is referring to is interpersonal intelligence- the ability to understand and interact with people.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's called EQ in my book ("emotional intelligence").

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

To me the term "emotional intelligence" is too broad because a personal can be intelligent with regards to their own emotions and/or the emotions of others. That's why I prefer "interpersonal intelligence" being able to understand other people act and feel, and "intrapersonal" being able to understand your own thoughts and feelings.

Relating back to TRP, I think when people talk about "inner-game" what they are referring to is intrapersonal intelligence, being able to step back and consider what's important to you and how you feel about yourself-- and change what you don't like. I believe being alpha starts with being confident in the person you are; improving the qualities that you value and removing the ones you don't. So without intrapersonal intelligence it's hard to improve your interpersonal intelligence-- being able to understand how others feel and think, and then use that to your advantage.

[–]r_rships_account -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, there aren't. What you describe is an acquired skill that is underpinned by (you guessed it) intelligence.

[–]RNAofYouListening 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Make no mistake, women think power is sexy. Intelligence is nothing in a vaccuum, but it can be used to accrue power (through wealth, through ingenuity, through one becoming well-respected or irreplaceable in their chosen discipline).

[–]Ronfar 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

About a month ago I went out with a cheeky bitch of a girl (she constantly shit-tested me the whole night) who at one point blurted: "Oh you're not as smart as you think you are!" My response was to go into explaining the diference between special and general relativity. Clueless, she humped back and annoyingly said "hmph! You just learnt that in a book!" She then went on to explain what she thought was 'intelligence', which sounded very similar to what the girl in the post you posted said.

I haven't bothered with her since.

However to be fair, there are some very intelligent engaging women out there, which is actually a trait I admire. It's just a rarity to come across. In fact I've had some of the most deep and intelligent conversations on life, philosophy, politics and science with a girl.

It's just a lot of the rest that believe that intelligence is something other then the kind that helps you build bridges or advances civilisation.

So you can't have an opinion about an existing theory being false or only partially correct that for other people in the field is thought to be true?

There is definitely a place for informed opinion in science, hardly anything accepted as 'true' remains intact and unmodified over the years.

Having spend the last decade working in science, going to dozens of international conferences, meeting people from all sorts of fields - I can state with certainty that you're wrong, sir.

Sure, there are a few isolated cases where a researcher only wants to discuss their work with other experts, but the majority are ready, willing and eager to talk about their studies with the uninitiated.

They definitely don't think you're an idiot for finding their ideas interesting without fully understanding them.

[–]Ronfar 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly. Art, especially modern art today is an subjective experience - the reasoning behind a piece of art isn't from the author, it's whatever you as the observer interprets it to be. So you can pretty much BS anything. I believe this is what postmodernism in art and design is (as I remember it).

[–]mutualaid -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

if you really think that, you don't understand science. there's a lot of gray.

[–]Big_Man_On_Campus 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, not really. Science doesn't have gray. In scientific fields you either have evidence that demonstrates something else, or you don't. That which is not provable either way is not science, it is philosophy.

Well I consider myself to be pretty smart every I.Q. test I have taken puts me over 135 (High score= 145). And well lying for me is incredibly easy it's not something to be proud of but it certainly is useful when the need arrives. My point is this girl has probably met smart men that manipulated her without her even knowing it probably for weeks at a time. This is supported by several articles that support the point that the smarter someone is the easier it is to lie and the dumber you are, the more gullible and easy prey you become. Maybe she finds this smart men charming...

I find it funny that empathy for women seems to fall into the realm of patriarchy nonsense. Which is affirmative action that doesn't even work well for minorities.
