I really just need some advice from the smart women of this subreddit, any kind of encouraging/tough love sort of advice would be great. I just turned 20 and I have a huge problem. I've never been in a real relationship or even on a date. That in itself isn't really the core issue, it's how I've only been having long distance online relationships. The only times I've "been with" a guy have been online. I talked to two guys over the span of four years (not at the same time) and never met them, although the intention was to meet. I was extremely insecure about my looks before and also very scared to lose my virginity. Part of this has to do with my dad dying when I was little and feeling like I was chasing an unrealistic ideal of a partner. Engaging in online stuff was really damaging to me mentally I think, and I feel like I've wasted a lot of time when I could have been practicing dating in real life.

A few months ago I met a guy online who I was actually going to meet. We had everything planned, plane tickets booked (which I never had done with the others), etc. We were just friends at the time, but it was really different with him. We have extremely similar childhoods, music and film tastes, values and morals, political views, etc. He called us "twin flames". I told him things I've never told anyone and he did with me as well, just because I really thought he was going to be "the one" or whatever. In hindsight this sounds like a tale as old as time kind of thing. I just feel stupid now.

But long story short, some family stuff happened, I can't go to his state until next semester, and he moved onto someone else. It really hurts because I know for sure this time I missed out on someone I could've actually been with, had it not been for my family drama. It literally physically pains me thinking of him with the other girl. I'm trying to get over it but I'm not sure where to start and I'm also scared of ending up alone/in shitty relationships. Like, I transferred to three different universities not in the pursuit of a better education, but the possibility that the city might have the kind of guys I like. It's insane to think that I did that and how it might translate over to how I behave in relationships.

I'm just not sure where to start, what to do, etc. I'm going to get a therapist and start working again. But I'm just terrified of feeling lonely - I'm not used to it, and it's freaking me out, and I'm just wondering if y'all have any ideas on how to be semi-okay during nun mode or any other period where you're trying to get over a guy. Thank you.
