Hey guys, so I am 24(M) and have a question. Might be a little bit esoteric, but hoping someone would have some good insight or discussion.
I was pretty standard beta for most of my life, being Asian American didn't help, but that discussion has been had to death. I thought of this when I read laid NYC's post on having a mission that is currently on the frontpage. I completely relate the sentiment that having a mission and the way that changes a male makes you much more attractive. Being in med school and a doctor gives you a bit of status in and of itself, which for some people is the little push you need to start things off. That being said, you wouldn't believe the number of doctors loaded with $$$ that are with ugly ugly women. Honestly my heart dies a bit inside everytime I see it. Being on rotations in a different clinic or hospital every month is a bit of an interesting perspective. Every male doctor is relatively equal in terms of status, I mean all the male doctors are...doctors. Most women cannot reasonably expect any more in that one specific area. Seeing the different levels of what they have accomplished in terms of women puts a lot of the alpha/beta dynamics into clear view. For them to be doing as badly as some of them do with that much of a foundation in terms of being the social elite really highlights how important a lot of the things we talk about on this forum are. Additionally, a lot of pre-meds were the smart nerdy kids in school and were very beta to start with and feel compelled to climb. You see a lot of people at different stages in their journey, which is also kind of cool.
I went on a bit of a tangent. Here is my actual question. On psychiatry rotation I read a book called "the Drama of the Gifted Child". It is hard for me to outline it here because its kind of long and framed in very psychoanalytical terms, but the basic idea is that through a very specific early childhood mechanism, some mothers (or other caregivers) kill off self-determination and initiative in the child and causes long-term repression of aspects of the self in the child. I can go into the mechanism and the outline of the book a bit more if this post gets interest, but I thought it heavily relates to a lot of the tendencies RedPill teaches people to struggle against. I know that book helped me a lot. I would earnestly recommend it to everybody except that it is an extremely technical read.
Anyone else read the book and have thoughts on the link between the two areas?
*EDIT*
here is the summary since a few of you guys asked for it. Also read ttrazadone's comment, its a good summary and application.
The basic idea is that the child NEEDS the mother's approval and affection as a precondition to survival. A baby is completely helpless. Some parents and cultural parenting systems use this as a tool. They mold the child to the parent's desires by limiting parental approval and making it scarce. This happens in positive form (you should study or I won't give you approval) or negative form (if you express lust/flirtatiousness/disrespect/dominance, I won't give you my approval). The child will be incredibly driven to meet these criteria since, again, parental approval is an a prior facet to survival. The child will also become very perceptive towards how to read what the people around them want. However, the child will also become a people pleaser and always be needy and approval seeking for the rest of their lives because that pattern is established. What exactly gets killed off depends on what the cultural system or the parents themselves decide is valuable or not.
In asian cultures that could be things like assertiveness, dominance, and other loosely defined "alpha" characteristics. In latin culture this process is applied to girls where they are made to deny their sexual nature (The famous "catholic guilt"). It can literally be anything characteristic that is killed-off by this mechanism. Now, a degree of this is necessary, or a person would be completely unsocialized and we would all literally murder each other.
This can be adaptive for finding a partner in a lot of cases. In a lot of American families this mechanism is used to repress expression of emotion in men. This is fine because that is what women expect out of men around here. It can also be maladaptive though in other areas, since emotional repression of this sort can cause a lot of psychiatric issues like anger management disorders and physical issues like hypertension. Latin culture does not repress men's emotion to such a degree, hence you get the sexy "passionate latino/Enrique Iglesias" types, which is cool. When it becomes maladaptive is when this process becomes a problem. Asian cultures repress a bit too much of their children. It makes sense for the time and place the culture came from. People had to be that way in Asia, where resources were scarce and people were just subsisting. A more alpha mindset in that situation would just make you embittered because the crushing poverty that is your life does not allow you to pursue what you want. People go on embittered rageful stabbing sprees all the time in China, showing that even "repressed" isn't "repressed enough" if your circumstance is awful enough. However, when the culture of "repression and beta-ness" gets brought to America completely unchanged, it becomes maladaptive and you can't compete in the sexual market place without a reprogramming of yourself, which is fucking hard.
The author, Alice Miller, actually spends over half of the book going over "how to get over this." Basically, just seeing this isn't enough, you have to do a lot of confrontation of parent's/the past/and most of all psychoanalysis according to her. Now psychoanalysis, in addition to being stupidly expensive and time consuming, is also not really that practiced anymore so its not a realistic option. I think the truth is somewhere between, just seeing it intellectually (see yapping foxes metaphor in buddism) isn't enough, but it is a good first step. A lot of "red-pill" ideas and methods I believe are an effective way to get over these issues.
