This is a damn good question because when men lose self belief women leave them on a dime. Point being is conventional wisdom says his status/capability is supposedly a reflection of his genes.

An alpha is a dark triad loser who ends up either in jail, or as an "artist" or on welfare or the death row, or as a bullshitting "people" person kept around at companies for his limited utility. His social status is non existent after the jock phase in high school or college. If he finds any stability at all, it is in one of the blue collar trades, where he is generally seen as an unreliable worker, or in the military.

She wants his genes.

Back in the evolutionary past, Might Made Right. Violence was golden; it quite literally led to more food and more wealth. Strength directly translated into more resources for the offspring. Thus, women who bred with "Chads" were more likely to have offspring that went on to breed successfully.

In the modern world, capital and information-driven economies have upended this; most wealth is made not through physical capability but through new ideas and new inventions. This means that women's physical urges tempt them with Stanley Kowalskis, whilst the more rational choices (from the perspective of resource-procurement) are often substantially less physically exciting.

Bill Gates is not a sex symbol. Being rich and powerful doesn't make one attractive (although one can use money to buy plastic surgery and trainers to make one more attractive but that's a separate issue). Women are, yes, physical and shallow like men are. So they do prefer guys with hot bodies (since they show more evolutionary fitness for the environment we were subject to for most of our evolutionary history).

But its not the genes itself, but physical traits that indicate the presence of such genes. And those traits, back in the evolution-days, led to status and wealth.
