Flirting isn't just about guaging and communicating interest. Half of it is, sure. The other half is showing that you are skillful at flirting.

The reason flirting is subtle is that subtlety is the easiest way to distinguish between people who have good social acuity and people who don't. The reason we don't immediately jump on each other's laps when we meet someone we find attractive is that we (usually the girl) need to assess the other person's personality. The biggest risk to a baby is another tribe member. We need to be sure our potential partner can adequately navigate social environments.

Flirting is a really effective way of testing whether your partner knows how the game is played.

You can't demonstrate that by touching someone. Trying to flirt just by touching someone gives the complete opposite impression and shows you have no idea how the game is played at all. Touching is efficient and direct, yes, but it's a progression. You only get to do it after you've shown that you are socially intelligent.

I say you let her touch you first before you touch her back. You risk coming off creepy if you're just preemptively touching women.

Touching (kino) is one way but not necessarily the most direct or revealing. Verbal sparring, body language, attitude and such can get you a lot farther a lot faster if you play it right.

It works only if you've already gotten her interested, or if she was interested in you to begin with. Touching someone out of the blue can be a risky move.

the most direct and revealing way of flirting for most men is being forward and direct about what they want, usually verbally. Women expect men to do this. Women expect and want men to be direct and blunt about their sexual interest. It isn't just touching; it's everything. It's his approach. It's his talking and what he says. It's his attempt to get a number. It's his attempt to "kiss close". It's his attempt to take her somewhere alone. (the greatest proof of a woman's attraction to a man is her agreement to be somewhere with him alone.)

The best way to gauge a woman's interest level is to approach her and talk with her; and then be forward and direct about your sexual interest in her. Let's not beat around the bush here - she knows about your sexual interest. A man giving any attention whatsoever to a woman means he's sexually interested in her. He knows it; she knows it. The point is to push the exchange to a place where he can make his interest plain, and then put it on her to agree to move it forward, or put the brakes on and reject him.
