To BP: Is there an epidemic of women lying about domestic "abuse" to get better divorce settlements?

Where do you people get off citing one high-profile example and extrapolating that there must be an "epidemic?" Have you been rage-baited or are you really that obtuse?

Furthermore, when have the lives of celebrities ever reflected normal people's reality?

I would say no because I like to think that I have a thorough understanding of the term 'epidemic.' Goddamn Peruvian flute bands are more of an epidemic than false rape/abuse claims.

It happens, but I'm not sure if you can speak of an epedemic. You have to understand that outrageous stuff gets clicks on the internet, while normal stuff doesn't.

Even if only one in thousand divorces have lying about domestic abuse and great injustice that comes with it, it's these cases that you're gonna read about on the internet. It's easy to be fooled and think "that's the third of that I've read this month, must be an epedimic!". But really it's most likely not the case.

How do you even expect us to answer this question? As an ex family lawyer, no I never once saw this. Also, if you're abused by your spouse your options are to pursue a criminal or civil case. There's no factor in alimony or property dissolution statutes that is based upon compensation for past abuse.

That being said it could be brought up in child custody disputes, and if you've been abused by your spouse you'll find a way to bring it up in a family law matter to garner sympathy with a judge. But if you're arguing that that women just make up domestic violence allegations in order to do so I can't imagine family law judges are that stupid just to take someone's word for it. You still have to have evidence, you're just not bound by the same evidentiary constraints (hearsay is admissible, etc).

I never once saw this type of behavior and I certainly don't think it would work on the scale you seem to think. But basically either party in a family law case can make up allegations against the other and support it with Facebook posts if they want. It's not gender exclusive and you have to rely on the judge to be able to sift through the bullshit.

If you're argument is women make these claims in order to have more leverage outside the courtroom to generate a better settlement, I'd say I've seen men try to leverage shitty behavior from their spouse too. If you don't bite because the allegations are false, the only option from the other side is to bring it to the judge. And the first question as a judge that I'd be asking is why didn't you file a domestic violence report when this took place?

Wait a second - did I miss something in that article, or did Stanhope say he heard from Depp that Heard was going to blackmail him? Wow, Johnny Depp himself - what an unbiased and reliable source in this situation.

IMO it's extremely foolhardy to say that one possible case makes for an epidemic. Especially when the article backing your idea is from the goddamn Daily Mail. You can't believe everything you read in a tabloid.

I wouldn't say epidemic. But, I feel if you end up following MRA blogs or places like that, lying about rape and domestic abuse happen constantly.

I don't know if it's an epidemic, but it definitely happens, and there's not punishment for false accusations, and lots to gain from when people believe the false accusations.
