What made my heart flutter in high school was the grunge look, which was indeed what was popular in the media at the time. Nirvana. Silverchair. Stone Temple Pilots. Musician types with long hair and plaid overshirts and ripped dirty jeans. Going after that type of guy not only fit what I was looking for aesthetically, but was also a pretty good indicator that I'd have things in common with him, at least music. I'm sure those guys didn't think their clothing choices were influenced by high fashion or the media, that they were just doing what came naturally to them, but it was clearly the popular trend. They were doing it because they both thought it looked cool and hoped it would get them laid. In being counter culture they were in fact incredibly main stream. And was never "repulsed" by guys who didn't wear clothes like that. I simply didn't notice those guys, they weren't on my radar. Clothes have never repulsed me. Do you think "society" - the media, pop culture, parents, friends, peers - has influenced, determined, even, your taste in men, and if so, how can you tell? For example, if you find that the men you find "cool" are similar to the "cool" people depicted on TV and at the movies, how do you know it's because those programs taught you that it was cool, versus the possibility that you liked the show because it depicted coolness as what you would naturally find cool, or attractive, or whatever, in the first place?

How long did the phase last, and did it leaving any lasting influences?

[The analogue for men is; Sports Illustrated doesn't determine what's attractive; they just put women that men naturally find the most attractive on their covers. Stuff like this will never change male preferences. When you find that what you find attractive syncs with what's depicted as such in pop culture, how do you which direction the causality goes, in each direction?]
