Why are these movies so loved by women?

Because the men are still ridiculously attractive and that along with what u/MethSkate says drives the feels. Show me those movies with ugly guys instead.

I know nothing about The Notebook, but Titanic?

I believe that I've pointed this fact out to you previously, but..."Mr. I'm the King of the World!" is fucking "alpha" to the core. Incredibly handsome, strong, does not GAF about anything, risk-taker, life of the party, whip sharp, and on and on.

He may be poor at the time, but he has ambition and chutzpah beyond what most mere mortals can ever muster.

He is literally the walking embodiment of a classic masculine archetype. They pretty much don't get any sexier than that...

I've never seen either but I'm pretty sure they were more popular with the tween audience. Teenage girls that have all their financial and security needs met by daddy don't need to worry about finding their beta bux so they can just concentrate on the alpha fucks side of their hypergamy, acquiring the best genetic material (eg. Di Caprio and Gosling).

50 Shades of Grey is popular with the adult women who are looking for both the alpha fux and beta bux. Remember, 50 Shades started out as fan-fiction for Twilight. Twilight was aimed at a tween audience and I'm pretty sure Edward (the vampire) was not rich either, he was just super attractive. It's still hypergamy (in the red pill sense of the word) it's just genetic hypergamy (looking for a man with the best genetic material available, certainly better than herself) rather than financial hypergamy (looking for the man with the most wealth).

Narrative wise, these perfect men have to be poor. It would be unbelievable if he also had money. Also, the story would lack conflict. No conflict=No story. Women love these movies because TRP is wrong. ;)

If I recall Titanic properly, Rose was being used as bait into a higher social class by her mother. There was some commentary that marrying this dude was going to secure their future so basically she was rebeling against that and latched on to what's his name because he talked some good shit and she was looking for the escape hatch.edit and the fiance character was rich but he was a major asshole so it was not a case of alpha man stealing the girl from wimpy nice rich guy it was two alpha dudes wrestling for her and one was a major dick and the other guy was a bit more fun.

Leo Decaprio in Titanic was Alpha as fuck. Many guys who are broke can nail hot chicks. It's the reason women will eschew rich accountants and fuck "hawt" tattooed guitar players if they are in a semi-popular local band with a following.

Leo in Titanic:

Was a skilled artist, and parlayed that into getting Kate naked on the couch for a nude portrait (draw me like one of your...you know it)
Was off limits to her by the likes of her high society family and husband-to-be. He was "dangerous" in that regard. They're trying to swoon on her, Leo is teaching her how to hock loogies for distance.
Had social proof among the commoners. Remember the Irish dance party scene where he was the life of the crowd and liked by all? Pre-selection.

Now that being said, dying for her at the end was pretty Beta. But I'm pretty sure that was written into the script to satisfy women's Disney fantasies.

It's funny. My wife always hated the Titanic. She laughed and said any woman with a brain would go with the dude with a lifeboat and a gun over the loser who is going to freeze to death. She also thinks Decaprio looked like skinny teenage wimp.

She did like the "Notebook" though.

Hypergamy is about trading up to a more Alpha male. In both of these movies, the love interests of the female protagonists were archetype Alpha males, so they were actually pro-Hypergamy.

Women love these movies because, like romance novels, they enable female viewers to experience Alpha Fux vicariously.

Haven't watched The Notebook.

In Titanic, they wanted to create "one true/pure love" scenario. If the guy has all the money and status, it's not surprising that many women would take his hand. Rose's love wouldn't be any more special than any other woman's love because it's easy. When the guy is not only poor and lower class, but dating him means costing you your fortune, stability and most likely your comfortable future, the stake is higher. Most, esp women from the time period immigrating to a new country, would no doubt choose comfortable life. So Rose proves her love is truly pure as there can be no other ulterior motive.

Add how she stayed single until she died, selling this "fiery passionate true love that never dies" idea. While I don't believe in hypergamy (depending on definition), people buying into the idealized and romanticized idea of one true love doesn't mean people are not hypergamous. Strict monogamy was just another tool to add to the drama.
