Good or not, it is perfectly acceptable in casual conversation to make derogatory comments about celebrities. No one would bat an eye if you talked about the greedy upper class. People make jokes about Oprah being fat, and Justin Bieber being a fag. The rich and famous are fair game for ridicule. Usually it doesn't even matter if the statements are true or not.

This occurs on multiple levels. It's OK to tease someone for being skinny. Not so if they are fat. It's perfectly acceptable to bash white people. However, if you make a derogatory comment about black people, most likely people will assume you are racist. Particularly relevant to this sub, it is generally more acceptable to make large scale derogatory comments or assumptions about men than it is to do the same towards women.

Why is this? Why does society find the same behavior more acceptable when applied to one group but not another? Maybe it makes us feel a little better about ourselves. Maybe we think it will somehow make the world more just by bringing the successful down a notch and cheering for the underdog.

Regardless of why, society divides groups into winners and losers. It's OK to bash winners, but not losers. It's fine to call Oprah fat, but not the gas station attendant, because Oprah is a winner and the attendant in a loser. Since historically, white, rich men have had more access to resources and power than any other group, society still sees them as the winners and therefore more open to ridicule.

It really isn't fair. Not all men have benefited from being men. Not all celebrities have unlimited validation and self-esteem. Each white person doesn't have it better than every Black person. Fair or not, this is the current state.

Now this causes conflict with groups like TRP, not because TRP disagrees with this rule, but because they disagree which groups are the winners and which groups are the losers. According to TRP, women are the winners. They are put on a pedestal by most of society. They are given a free pass to all sorts of shitty behavior. They have more options and power in the sexual market place. TRP is ok with bashing women, because they think that women need to be taken down a notch, just like in regular society, we subconsciously believe that celebrities need to be taken down a notch.

Now TRP may take it to extremes, but this is proportional to how much they view women as the winners. TRP is just operating under rules that society has already decided. Society says go ahead an bash winners all you want, just don't pick on the little guy. So this is all TRP is doing when it bashes women. They are technically playing by the rules.

It is all extremely petty on both sides.
