As long as women have legal options to opt out of parenthood, then so should men. Women can abort, adopt out (often without father’s knowledge) and abandon (baby Moses laws) their infant children without repercussion. Since men don’t have the legal/moral right to force a mother to terminate a pregnancy, it’s my opinion that (unmarried) men should have the option to financially “abort” their children. In affect, the man would be neither legally nor financially responsible for the child. He would also have no right to assert any claim to the child post divestment, unless he were later allowed to adopt the child (which would be an unlikely scenario). The logistics of this would need to be determined by the legislature, but I propose that men be given a certain window to initiate the process after discovering the mother is pregnant. Perhaps a similar amount of time that correlates to how long a woman has to get an abortion in that jurisdiction. In cases where the pregnancy was hidden from the father (intentionally or otherwise), then the father would have a certain amount of time after being made aware of the child to initiate the legal proceedings requesting he be relieved of responsibility.
