So I may be late to this, but today I learnt that the original Swedish title for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was Men Who Hate Women. I tried to google why they changed this, and I can’t find anything solid, all I can kind of come up with is conjecture that essentially if they’d kept the original title it would never have gotten so popular because western men would not have read it. Instead of a title that really encapsulates major themes of the book and world views reflective of the main character’s experience, we got a slightly cutesy femme fatale sounding mystery title. I feel it takes away from the bite of the book. Does anyone have any other examples of titles being changed to not offend the delicate sensibilities?
