I agree. I don't use makeup, but I do put on moisturizer during the winter, sunscreen in the summer, and aloe on burns to help alleviate peeling...and then see guys who look like the love child of a lobster and shedding lizard. Like, come on, playing with cancer isn't "manly".

And acne! Geez, I know some people get it really bad, but it always seems like boys get it worse. They probably don't, it's just that they are told "skincare is girly". Uh, no. Using products that help clear up your face, chest, and back so you don't look like the surface of the moon is just common sense. I gave one of my high school guyfriends a bottle of the same face soap I was using, and he went from looking like a pepperoni pizza to practically normal skin in less than 2 weeks.

It's a fucking shame that just slightly more than basic hygiene is considered "feminine" when it could be used to raise the smv of so many guys.

A lot of men lack male role models as kids and never learn how to take care of themselves. I was never taught how to shave, tie a tie, etc. All that stuff was trial and error.

I also notice there’s something strange in US culture, particularly in white Americans, where basic hygiene and grooming is considered effeminate and ridiculed. Getting called a “fag” for using hair gel or moisturizer was pretty much expected growing up. Being fashionable as a man is often looked down upon in America where I’ve found it’s expected in other countries.

As a woman I remember being in first grade, and my mom and older sister physically pinning me down to shave my legs. Because I’m pale and have dark, thick hair, body hair is more noticeable on me than it would be on other people. I got bullied all the time in elementary school for having a mustache or a unibrow or hairy armpits, but my male classmates were equally as hairy and no one ever mentioned it.
