Okay, this might not be the most popular theory, but I suspect the "I had a good time in high school" was just an excuse to reject him for other things. Lots or fairly well adjusted people were miserable in middle and high school for all sorts of reasons. To me, that just sounds like a more creative version of "it's not you, it's me."

So the guy obviously went through a lot in school(obviously school is socially great for some and hell for others) and he’s put himself together to get to the point of talking with her.

Seems like she’s the shallow one for expressing disgust at his struggles. Obviously society celebrates women for being honest but throws boulders at men who are honest.

In the end, she’s entitled to her preferences, but she’ll also be responsible for her situation if she fails to find a man; if society worked properly she would be labeled an old maid and left to live out the rest of her life alone.
