One of the biggest problems with dating is not a gendered issue at all. People trust themselves implicitly, never questioning their own emotions, motivations, assumptions or impressions of other people, leading them into disastrous choices. E.g.:

"My partner is so loyal and sweet, they can't possibly be cheating on me. I would know if they were - I can read people."

"Every person I date has turned out to be a disappointment - that must mean that the entire gender is fucked up, rather than suggesting I've experienced a small and nonrepresentative sample size or that I have a biased perspective."

"Lately I've felt like my spouse is awful and has no redeeming qualities - while this new person seems like they really care about me. They are unlike anyone ever met. It can't be just be that a spouse's flaws will always be more apparent than a stranger's flaws, or that my funky monkey brain is designed to pursue the next shiny object."

"I'll never get divorced because I was smart enough to choose the right person and it just feels like our marriage is meant to be."

"My ex is a demon summoned from hell and our breakup/divorce is completely their fault."

These are all self-serving narratives, rooted in flimsy feelings and unearned self-trust.

Your brain is a confident and charismatic fortune teller, but it's full of shit. Your brain is a con-artist and you're the mark. Your brain is skewed, biased, limited, flawed, untrustworthy, inconsistent, and brimming with fallacies and delusions. It is constantly lying to you in order to get you to reproduce as much as possible while feeling good about yourself.

The reality is that the other gender is a diverse and heterogenous population, defying categorization. Other individuals are complex enigmas - their true feelings and future actions are inaccessible to you. Instead of being cautious about making assumptions in this situation, your brain qualifies itself to make predictions with 100% accuracy. Feelings are not facts - especially feelings about other human beings. If you don't realize that, you're going to stumble through shitty romantic decision after shitty romantic decision, blaming the opposite sex for those decisions, since that allows you to maintain your ego and continue trusting yourself.

I don't fully trust my own funky monkey brain, so I'm open to discovering gaps in my theory.
